Evan Tully liked thisEvan Tully liked thisWhat a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning at Saint Mary’s College of California listening to an inspiring talk from Dr. Sonya Schuh during the Supporting Your Science Queen event organized by American Association of University Women. Saint Mary's College of California Sonya Schuh AAUW does incredible work advancing opportunities for women and girls through education, leadership, and advocacy, and events like this help inspire the next generation of young women to explore careers in STEM. What made the morning even more meaningful for me was seeing my daughter, Amira, sitting on the student panel. Watching her share her experiences as a junior studying science and helping encourage younger girls to pursue their curiosity in STEM filled me with so much pride. It was also a bit of a full circle moment. Years ago, I was one of the parents sitting in the audience at events like this while Amira was in middle school and high school, hoping to expose her to opportunities and mentors in science and technology. Today, I had the privilege of watching her on stage helping inspire the next generation. Moments like this remind me how powerful encouragement, mentorship, and community support can be for young women exploring STEM. So proud of you,Amira Cebalo , and grateful to organizations like AAUW and the community partners who make programs like this possible. Four years ago, joining the company was not the obvious choice for someone who grew up in the Bay Area. In many ways, it felt counterintuitive. What I couldn’t have anticipated was how deeply the experience would shape me, not just as an operator, but as a leader. At Walmart, customer focus is not a slogan; it is a discipline. Decisions are debated through that lens. Tradeoffs are measured against it. Priorities are reset because of it. When an organization operates at that scale with that level of intentionality, it sharpens you. I was fortunate to work with leaders who consistently set incredibly high expectations and standards. This rare environment, characterized by genuine ownership and demanding benchmarks, pushed me to grow in the most positive ways. I’m deeply grateful to leaders like Tomas Ponce De Leon, Rina Hurst, Eliza Wendel, RD, Jennifer McKeehan, Kohl Perkins (蘇明杰) and Manish Joneja, who trusted me early, challenged my assumptions, and modeled what world-class leadership looks like in practice. They created space for ownership, demanded clarity of thinking, and reinforced that velocity and standards are not mutually exclusive. Their example reshaped how I make decisions, how I build teams, and how I think about long-term impact. For those who still view Walmart simply as a big-box retailer, I’d encourage a closer look. The scale of its impact on families and communities across this country is extraordinary. I arrived curious and slightly skeptical. Today, I leave with deep respect for the mission, the people, and the responsibility that comes with serving at that scale. The next chapter is already in motion, and I’m energized to build again. I close this one with deep gratitude for four transformative years that sharpened my ambition and expanded my horizon.
