Emily Garcia liked thisEmily Garcia liked thisAs a HIRING Manager if I REJECT a candidate. These are the 3 things I would do to not hurt their chances of getting another JOB. 1. Tell the recruiter all the strong points I saw in the candidate. 2. Provide the candidate with feedback on how they can improve. 3. Recommend them to my network for any suitable vacancies. It annoys me at the lack of respect and empathy, some recruiters and hiring managers show to candidates. Job searching can emotionally and mentally draining. Put yourself in the candidates' shoes. We all at one point were jobseekers, and it doesn't take much for anyone of us to be a jobseeker again. A little empathy and respect goes a long way. Let's make the recruiting process more humane. Emily Garcia liked thisEmily Garcia liked thisI once interviewed this young lady highly recommended...Couldn't answer a question properly being so nervous. I knew who she worked for and this person wouldn't recommend someone unless they truly believed in them. It was a panel interview. So I asked 2 of the panelists to leave the room and just me and the HR manager remained. She was able to do better with the remaining questions but overall didn't do well in the interview. Still I couldn't get past my gut feeling she was the best candidate for the job. She had a good record and I was convinced to give her a try and within 6 months, she was one of my top performers. You just never know who it is behind the person shown in an interview. We shouldn't be too quick to cross someone off who didn't do well in the interview. The truth is interviews can be nerve-wracking. There is much more to a person that just passing / failing an interview. Focus on the real person and what they can bring to the table. #BrigetteHyacinth

Emily Garcia liked thisEmily Garcia liked thisLast year in May, finishing my junior year as a CS major, I had no internships related to my major. Some students from other universities would be on their way into their third internship. Code2040. Code2040 helped me get my first internship in Summer 16 and introduced me into a world I never knew existed. I can actually say that it changed my life. Today, a bit more than a year later I've had 3 CS internships, which is all thanks to Code2040. But what's more important is that Code2040 and the Fellows Program gave me the knowledge and ability to jump over professional and mental hurdles that some minorities in tech don't even know exist or know that they have. I had a community around me to help fight this thing we all face called Imposter Syndrome that we think we're alone in having, and peers to push me to be my best. This week I start my first full time job as a Software Engineer at Snap Inc. I couldn't be more excited, but I know that gratitude is deserved, and that gratitude extends to Code2040, the organization who I can definitely say I wouldn't be here today without. Many thanks to those who've been with me in this professional journey, including Code2040, friends, family, and most importantly my girlfriend Erika Hairston for who I wouldn't have this job without.

It was a big step up from his current role, and he had all the right skills and qualifications. "Sorry but I'm not interested," he politely said. I pressed him on it until he said something that really confused me. He told me that he "already made it to the top". I was familiar with his current company and looked at his resume again. He wasn't anywhere near the top. He would have needed a telescope to see the top. He wasn't even a manager yet. He explained to me that "making it to the top" for him meant he loved the exact work he did each day, he loved his company, he was treated fairly and with respect, he made enough money to be comfortable, he had excellent benefits, he had flexibility, and most importantly to him, he's never missed a single Little League game, dance recital, parent-teacher conference, anniversary, birthday, or any family event. He knew what taking the next step in his career meant. More time, travel, and sacrifice. "Not worth it," he said. Your definition of "making it to the top" doesn't have to be society's or anyone else's definition. You Do You.

My team and I worked together to recreate the first level of the classic arcade game, Frogger. For the development of this project I used C++ and the SFML Library. One of my roles for this project was coding the foundation for the sprites and basic sprite movement. Two others were establishing screen boundaries to keep sprites within the screen as well as design and create start / game over screens. See projectDirected a team of two in creating an image manipulation program that removes unwanted passersby from a batch of images using Python. Developed an algorithm that takes in nine images, finds the median pixel values, and uses these to construct an image with any obstructions to the main subject removed.

Job Search App

For this project we created a job search engine that presents the job results to a GUI created with TkInter, from there the user can choose to read a description of the job or to map the job's location. I was in charge of communicating with the Github Jobs API through POST requests and then assigning output to different areas of the GUI. I also researched and implemented mapping features using Matplotlib Basemap.

Systems Optimization Club (Cal Poly)
Our final SOC team is redesigning the Cal Poly IME Industry Advisory Board (IAB) webpage to better attract students and clearly explain the IME program at Cal Poly. The project team includes Ryan Gardner (Lead), Emilio Vizcaino, Erin Castillo, Zoey Lim, Alejandro Lachica, and directed by Yujiun Chen (Project Director) and Isabella Gamarra (Assistant Project Director). So far the team has: - Audited the current IME department website to identify gaps in content, structure, and overall usability - Conducted competitor research by reviewing websites from peer universities to identify best practices - Gathered student feedback to define key user needs and prioritize high-impact pages such as the Home, Blended Master’s Program, and Student Clubs pages - Using Google Sites, developed an improved site structure to better organize information and departmental resources We are excited to see what this team does throughout the rest of the quarter and the final product.
