While serving here in Guatemala, I had the opportunity to hand out toys—and what I received in return was far greater than anything I could give. The kindness, warmth, and genuine gratitude of the people here is truly humbling. Their smiles, their resilience, and their appreciation for even the smallest gestures are incredibly powerful. I feel so privileged to be here this week, with @this community and being part of something meaningful. Experiences like this remind me how much there is to be thankful for and how important it is to serve others. My heart is full. 💛

While my time on the ground may be brief, the purpose is long-term impact—supporting the people of Guatemala by expanding access to surgical care and honoring the dignity of every patient we serve. It is truly an honor to use my skills to help those in need, and I am deeply grateful for the support that makes this mission possible. At minimum, the non-physician providers scrubbed in during surgery should be required, by the state, to be educated and certified, not someone who doesn't meet standards just to alleviate staffing shortages. Patients deserve better! #wearesurgicalassistants

This statement comes with immense respect and admiration for our esteemed surgeons. You thank the sales rep, acknowledge the nurses, recognize your PAs, office staff, and anesthesia team, and rightly so. But what about your preferred surgical assistant? * The one who knows your hands before you even ask. * The one you personally call when a case gets moved. * The one whose absence forces you to cancel a case or, frankly, makes for a very long day until they arrive. * The only one that doesn't get a break and stays with you for the duration of the case. They deserve recognition too. Credentialed, skilled, and quietly indispensable, a great surgical assistant reduces operative time, anticipates your next move, and enables you to operate at the top of your license every single day. However, when discussions about surgical workforce planning occur, they rarely begin with surgical assistants. They should. I have dedicated my career to elevating this profession, advocating for recognition, and helping to build the future of a workforce that healthcare cannot afford to overlook. That’s a decent hike. Candidate: 🤝 Sir, considering my skills, certifications, and experience, I was expecting around 40,000. HR: 🙄 Look, salary expectations should be realistic. You’ll learn a lot here. Candidate (hesitant): Alright… I’ll join. ⏳ Two Months Later 📊 The candidate consistently delivered strong performance. ⏱️ Deadlines? Always met. 📌 Extra responsibilities? Taken up without complaint. ✨ Appreciation? Sadly, none. The workload doubled, but recognition never came. 📞 One day, another offer landed on the table. 💼 50,000 per month. 👉 The candidate resigned. Manager: 😲 “You could’ve told us, we would’ve done something.” Reality: When it mattered, nothing was done. 💡 Lesson for Leaders & HR ✅ When someone shares their worth—listen. 🚫 “You’ll learn a lot here” is just a fancy way of undervaluing people. 🎯 Respect + Fair Pay = Retention of the best people.
