In the case of this photo, taken back in December 2024, art brought me together with Karl-Anthony Towns of the New York Knicks(!) I helped give him an after hours tour of the incredible Alvin Ailey show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, we got to talking (I taught him everything he knows - lol) and I’ve had the pleasure of keeping in touch a bit now that I’m at Christie's. He is so passionate about art, so nice, so supportive of cultural institutions and I’m SO rooting for him during the Finals!! Go KAT! Also . . . my jobs remain so cool. #nba #basketball #finals #knicks

I could go on and on about the diverse and exciting nature of the work, the stunning objects I’ve gotten to see, the incredibly supportive and collaborative environment, the wonderful brilliant colleagues, the excitement around creativity and new ideas, and the high standards that I love (in a nutshell: I am loving this). But for now I’ll just share a photo of me and the Lucille Coleman collection, part of our sparkling, record-setting jewels auction in June. It was the first collection I helped pitch for at this storied company so will always be a personal highlight. Onward! So much more excitement to come . . .

Elizabeth Velez reacted on thisElizabeth Velez reacted on thisMy favorite work photo of 2024: Whitney Museum of American Art chief curator (and amazing sport) Kim Conaty very seriously discussing Edward Hopper with Patience, the The New York Public Library mascot, who was at the Museum to celebrate NYPL story times coming to the Whitney’s Free Second Sundays program. For me it was worlds colliding, but it was also a hilarious beginning of a beautiful friendship with NYPL that helped make 2024 a year of new audiences and increased accessibility at the Whitney. Glad it will continue in 2025! Happy new year!

Elizabeth Velez liked thisElizabeth Velez liked thisBig news to share! This Wednesday is my last day at the Whitney Museum of American Art! After 2.5 eventful, rewarding, fun, successful years, I am moving on to another storied institution: Christie's, where I’ll be running communications for the Americas! I am extremely excited for this new challenge at a global organization and to do something completely new and different after 15 years in non-profit comms. I'm also sad to leave the Whit, such a phenomenal, special place, with so many phenomenal, special people. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to work at a museum I've loved since my second grade class trip there in 1988, and to do 10 years worth of strategic comms in 2.5 (how efficient!). It has been a pleasure and a privilege to help launch the most robust free admission program in Whitney history, shepard the institution through its first leadership transition in decades, and set records for media impressions, social media engagement, and more. I'm also so proud of the creativity I was allowed to bring to the table to radically improve awareness of the institution alongside the best colleagues anyone could ever ask for. I’m going to really, truly, sincerely miss them (I walked into my office this morning for my last week and found these balloons, to show what kind of team they are!). I’ll be cheering them from afar and can’t wait to see what they do next (and to visit just for fun!). As for me - I could not be more excited to start in January (although I have a few more things up my sleeve at the Whitney before I move on).

That’s one of many things I’ve learned since the Whitney Museum of American Art opened our exhibition Edges of Ailey, the first museum show to explore the life and legacy of one of America’s most important artists. To showcase Alvin Ailey’s continued and enduring impact on all aspects of our culture, we launched “Alvin Ailey and Me,” a project to collect testimonials sharing what Ailey’s life and work means to people. One of the participants was none other than Vanessa Williams, who I had the pleasure of meeting at the Museum. See her official entry and my behind the scenes pic (with Tracy Severe from AILEY).
