THE "ARE WE THERE YET?" PROBLEM IN SYSTEM DESIGN. 🔄 I’m currently architecting the "Live Score" feature for my personal Sports Analytics project, and it forced me to confront the classic trade-off: Polling vs. WebSockets. The naive approach is Short Polling: The frontend asks the server "Any new goals?" every 1 second. • Pros: Easy to implement (standard REST). Stateless. • Cons: 99% of requests return "No Change." It burns server CPU and bandwidth for nothing. The "Real-Time" approach is WebSockets: We open a persistent, bi-directional tunnel between the Client and Server. The server "pushes" the data only when a goal actually happens. But here is where the Python vs. C++ decision gets interesting. In Python (using FastAPI or Django Channels), managing thousands of open WebSocket connections is heavy because of memory overhead per connection. If this app were to scale to millions of users (like WhatsApp or Discord), I’d likely have to move the socket layer to C++ (using libraries like uWebSockets) or Go to handle the concurrency without eating all the RAM. For now, I’m sticking to a hybrid architecture: 1. Ingestion: Python scripts fetching live data. 2. Message Broker: Redis Pub/Sub to broadcast events. 3. Delivery: A lightweight WebSocket service pushing updates to the UI. For those who have built real-time dashboards: At what scale did you find Python's async performance hitting a wall?
