After diving deeper into OpenTelemetry via KodeKloud, the distinction between monitoring and true observability has become much clearer. Moving beyond basic metrics to understanding the relationship between traces, spans, collectors, and TraceIDs changes the game for incident response. It turns troubleshooting from a guessing game into a forensic exercise. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘅 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀. I've interviewed 100+ "DevOps Engineers" who can recite kubectl commands but panic when asked to: → Debug a failing service with systemctl → Check disk space and inodes → Understand what's actually in /var/log → Set up basic file permissions → Use grep, awk, or sed effectively Kubernetes abstracts the OS layer. That's powerful... until something breaks. Then you're staring at CrashLoopBackOff with no idea why. The real DevOps engineers I know? They 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘅 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. They understand: - Process management - Networking basics (DNS, TCP, ports) - File systems and storage - Shell scripting - SSH and security fundamentals 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: Before you learn Kubernetes, spend 3-6 months getting comfortable in a Linux terminal. Deploy apps on bare metal or VMs. Break things. Fix them. Repeat. Once you understand what K8s is abstracting away, you'll be 10x more effective using it. Stop chasing the shiny tools. Together, they form one of the most powerful monitoring stacks for modern infrastructure. In a Kubernetes environment, Prometheus can collect metrics such as: ✅ CPU and memory usage ✅ Pod restarts and failures ✅ Request latency ✅ Error rates ✅ Network traffic ✅ Application-specific metrics Grafana then converts those raw metrics into dashboards that teams can actually use. But good monitoring is not about creating dozens of colorful dashboards. It is about answering important questions quickly: 🔹 Is the application healthy? 🔹 Are users experiencing slow responses? 🔹 Which service is causing the problem? 🔹 Are we approaching a capacity limit? 🔹 Did the latest deployment introduce an issue? One lesson I have learned: A dashboard without clear actions is just decoration. Every important panel should help an engineer detect, investigate, or resolve a production issue. Prometheus collects the signals. PromQL helps you analyze them. Grafana makes the story visible. Alertmanager ensures the right team takes action. That is how metrics become reliability.
