“I know David Siegel as an academic advisee since Fall 2004. On the basis of my interaction with him, his research work, and his class performance I perceive David as brilliant. During the last 10 years I have taught more than 700 undergraduate students, I supervised approximately 40 senior design projects, about 20 summer interns, and 6 PhD theses. David Siegel is by far the most creative student I have met in undergraduate or graduate level. I believe that Penn's name remains as a brand in the minds of people via the artifacts we build and how they can change the way people live. David's GNOME-DO changes the way that thousands of people interact with their Desktop. David has also shown an unprecedented leadership for his age, starting the project as an open source endeavor, guiding the contributions of many other authors, and taking important decision where the project should go. Talking to users and thoughtfully integrating their needs and wants was woven through everything we did at IDEO—threaded through every prototype and product decision. Reading my colleagues Joanne and Leo's latest work brought that to mind. They describe a future where research runs continuously, with AI agents recruiting participants and instantly surfacing insights. Synthetic personas, carefully trained on consumer signals, mirror human behavior closely enough to extend live studies and compress timelines from weeks to hours. Today user research mostly runs in fits and starts, prohibitively expensive and locked away in dedicated project cycles when it could be a constant companion, seamlessly integrated into the product development process.
