For my group's capstone project in CUNY Tech Prep's Data Science track, we're building a tool for students and job seekers to track, simulate and train for their technical interviews. It's still a work in progress, and one of the key features we’re implementing will allow users to record/upload audio explanations in response to a series of questions based on their submitted code. They'll be able to review their code solution alongside their audio transcription, and receive post-interview feedback to facilitate transparent standards in evaluation and continuous self-improvement. To explore this feature, I started a small project using Hugging Face and OpenAI's Whisper model to transcribe audio clips. It was pretty easy to hit the ground running with Angel Poon's video, "What Is Hugging Face and How To Use It", which provided a clear demonstration of Hugging Face's user-friendly platform, with access to pre-trained models, datasets, spaces, and other features that make building AI apps easy and accessible. I also came across Aleksa Gordić's thorough breakdown of the Whisper model in The AI Epiphany channel, titled "OpenAI Whisper: Robust Speech Recognition via Large-Scale Weak Supervision | Paper and Code". The video covered Whisper’s Transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture and its robust training on a massive multilingual dataset, enabling its zero-shot performance without the need for fine-tuning. I found out that Whisper can transcribe multi-language audio with diverse accents and background noise, making it very suitable and versatile for a range of speech-related projects.
