We got a founding requirement through the door two weeks ago that we’ve just closed. This YC founder, with two successful exits previously, came to us after closing a $10 million seed round looking for a Founding Engineer. I don’t think he expected us to introduce him to the developer he would hire on the same day he gave us the requirement. Three months ago, I cold-called this Senior Software Engineer leading architecture for a well-renowned Series A company that will be closing a Series B soon. He said now was not the right time, but to stay in touch as soon as he would be open to new opportunities. Every two weeks, I sent him an iMessage checking in with new positions and updating him on the market. When this requirement came through, I dropped him a note it was too perfect to ignore: a founder with two successful exits, an interesting domain, a solid base salary, and strong equity. He loved the thrill of being the first engineer on site, having ownership, and working with a great founding team. They loved him so much that they went straight to the top of their budget for base salary and equity. He accepted. We manoeuvred around the counteroffer from his current company that we expected, and he now starts on March 2nd. A developer with a substantial increase in base salary, equity, and scope and a founder with an A+ player to start building his business around. It doesn't get any better than this.
