Rapid advancements in biomedical research have led to the expansion of existing- and construction of new high and maximum containment laboratory facilities with the resources to study emerging and existing viruses with the potential to cause severe health and economic repercussions. To promote this mission, in 2022, the White House passed an execute order calling for the advancement of biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the form of innovative research that will result in evidence-based data to strengthen policymaking, sustainability, safety, and security of the American bioeconomy.
Biosafety professionals supporting these programs are seeking evidence-based research on viruses and novel laboratory techniques to provide the most technically sound, efficient, and safe environments for researchers to thrive. The virology community can assist in the establishment of biosafety and biorisk management programs by publishing safety and quality data from active studies, including agent-specific inactivation and disinfection, environmental susceptibility and resistance, and novel practices and procedures being used to further virological research. This poster will outline the potential routes for collaboration between the safety and virology communities. -
