David Enzminger liked thisDavid Enzminger liked thisThis past Sunday, I spent a beautiful evening at the Frankfort Bluegrass Festival, which was just down the street from my house. After watching the bands, I found myself thinking about the technology conversations I have been having lately. Each musician had a different role to play. The fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass all took turns in the spotlight, but what made the music excellent wasn't the quality of any single instrument. It was how well they played together and supported each other. The same idea applies to technology decisions. Many firms approach technology decisions as a search for the "best" system. Whether we're talking about CRM, ERM, EMS, relationship intelligence, or marketing automation, no platform excels at every requirement or solves every pain point equally well. The more important question is whether the systems can work together to support the firm's goals. Can they share information? Can they play to their respective strengths? Can they create a better experience collectively than any single platform could deliver on its own? Sometimes the question isn't which system is best. I believe that having a home is fundamental to dignity and foundational to feeling the safety and security people need to build a future for themselves and their families. That's why organizations like Habitat for Humanity are so important. They literally help people change their lives by giving them that foundation and sense of security. It’s vital for us to work and support this type of organization. The willingness to put in sweat equity for a better life should be applauded and supported. Our goal is to continue supporting Habitat and to find creative ways to raise awareness of the incredible work they do, while encouraging others to get involved as well.

The past four years have flown by and I’m incredibly impressed with all Preston has accomplished in high school and how he embodies Jesuit’s mission of becoming a man for others. As he takes off into the world, I can’t help but think about all the basketball games coached, carpools, meals (a lot of food), and countless other moments. Congratulations, Preston. You’ve already made us proud. Go set the world on fire. Hook'em!

Lawyers and law students, take some deep breaths. His point wasn’t “faster” or “cheaper.” It was different. The job of lawyer will shift from cranking out work product and giving advice to designing systems that spot risk and deliver outcomes for clients. The question will switch from “How quickly can we turn a draft?” to “How can we re‑imagine what ‘serving clients’ looks like?” Which brings us to ... Durable Dozen #5 - Curiosity & Adaptability Curiosity: What’s changing? What’s newly possible? What would I do if I weren’t constrained by the way we’ve always done it? I'm grateful that I had the ability to be very intentional about where to continue my practice after stepping away from public service. A well-timed conversation with former USPTO Director 💡Kathi Vidal helped me understand how well-matched Winston's world-class ITC and Federal Circuit practices are with the expertise I've been cultivating in those areas for the last 16 years. The ITC is where the highest‑stakes IP battles get decided — and for many of our clients, it’s the forum that can make or break a product line, a market position, or years of R&D investment. Those fights increasingly continue at the Federal Circuit, where ITC decisions are tested on appeal and the law is shaped for the next generation of cases. Building cases at the ITC that win at the Federal Circuit alongside the Winston team is a real privilege. Looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work.

I’ve been at the same firm my entire career, and have had the unique and rare privilege of working with the same core group of attorneys in Reed Smith’s intellectual property practice that entire time — amazing attorneys and dear friends. I’m so grateful for the privilege of having working with so many fascinating clients and technologies, and for the multiple trial victories I helped obtain. And also for the opportunity to have helped change lives through the pro bono work I did. Most of all, I am grateful for the people I met along the way — colleagues, clients and co-counsel. It’s been a privilege. I’m not entirely sure what the next chapter looks like, but I know it will involve lots of active travel, cycling, skiing, scuba diving, some creative writing, guitar, and whatever else the universe has in store for me!
