That’s Jett McCandless on the early days of building project44, in Ep. 70 of The Freight Pod. Jett's journey in freight started with dispatching trucks and sharing ETAs for $12 an hour at LTL carrier Roadway Express and led him to found one of the most influential supply chain tech companies in the world. Today, project44’s global supply chain network powers more than 1 billion shipments across 180+ countries each year. In this clip, he takes us back to the beginning, when he realized even the major logistics players were still running on outdated, manual processes and old EDI systems. After consulting with more than 50 brokerages, he saw it clearly: no one had it figured out. But since I am not planning on writing a novel or building birdhouses, I want to stay involved with what I have been doing most of my career - the intersection of property & casualty Insurance and technology. I am more than happy to participate in a conversation or two or ten and provide a little help and advice and also keep learning. I have done a ton of Policy Admin System (PAS) work including helping build out our custom PAS at Clearcover and then leading a big bang migration from our legacy PAS to our new one. Lots of stories to share there! So don’t hesitate to reach out.

I calmly took out my phone. When he was done yelling, I asked for his details. He put down his insurance details. "No," I said. "I mean your LinkedIn details." He looked super confused, but obliged. I write him a recommendation on his profile in front of him. "Trust me, this is worth more than a new car." He begins yelling again as I get in my car and drive away. A week later, he messages saying my recommendation has suddenly opened a lot of closed doors for him in Fintech. The debt has been repaid. Sometimes there are more important things than money, like a job in Fintech.

Darryl Anderson liked thisDarryl Anderson liked thisAn update, to those of you that I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of spending my working hours with these past few decades: Today I’m starting a six-month leave of absence from my engineering manager role that I’ve so enjoyed. During my first month off I’ll help celebrate my mother-in-law’s 100th year on earth, and then spend a few weeks walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain with my wife Barbara. And then… I’m unsure. My confidence in knowing what will be coming down the pike took a severe hit 16 months ago when (as many of you know) my dear son Nathan died while in Portugal (https://lnkd.in/gn9ddx2E). While my current employer has been wonderfully supportive since this tragedy, I’m wanting to pause my working life, in order to have space to consider where my own remaining years might take me. As well as space simply to grieve. And so, I’m off, stepping a bit into the unknown. Perhaps our paths will cross in the days to come. I’d like that.

Darryl Anderson liked thisDarryl Anderson liked thisMy last gig was at Clearcover, where I had a great time helping to build out a team of very talented ML engineers and data scientists. They've continued to do very strong work, and I love hearing updates about all the great stuff they're up to. Now I'm very happy to report that after taking some time off, I'll be joining the ML team at Agero starting on Monday. This is the kind of job I really enjoy -- helping a group of smart people build ML capabilities where there is an opportunity for the work to have a major impact on the business. Much like Clearcover, Agero has the right team to take on this challenging work, support from leadership, and a logical, but still ambitious plan to establish ML as an important element of their product. It should be fun!
