I've been using Claude Code, Codex, CoWork, and other coding agents daily for months. They've crossed a line they can't uncross. If you haven't used these tools recently, you're underestimating what you're missing. Software development is undergoing a renaissance. The question isn't whether AI will write most code. It already does. The question is: how small will the minority of manual coders be? My bet: smaller than anyone in a boardroom is currently planning for. METR's latest research shows GPT-5.2 autonomously handles software tasks equivalent to 6-7 hours of expert human work. The metric has been exponentially increasing over the past 6 years. Doubling time: around 7 months. If this holds: → End of 2028: multi-week engineering tasks, fully AI-driven → 3 years from now: month-long autonomous projects The curve is going vertical Most planning is still horizontal. Companies are hiring for roles that will be automated before those employees finish onboarding. Universities are running 3-year programs for jobs with a 2-year automation horizon. What We Owe the People We're Training? I teach AI university students and young professionals I look at my students and genuinely wrestle with this: What do we owe them? Do we keep teaching them to write code by hand because the curriculum says so? Or do we rebuild education around what's actually coming? The best thing you can do right now—regardless of role—is start using these tools. Not reading about them. Using them. Every week you wait, the gap widens. Knowing what to learn isn't the hard part. Knowing what to let go of is. We're psychologically built to resist exactly this kind of change. And even when we accept it, reconstructing meaning from what's left isn't something a course or a framework can solve. What are you building toward that actually matters in 2026?
