User says: “Need this urgently.” Supplier says: “Lead time minimum 3 weeks.” Finance says: “Please reduce the cost.” Management says: “Why is this taking so long?” And somehow… procurement is expected to solve everything at the same time. After years working in purchasing, I realized: procurement is not only about buying. It’s about handling pressure without spreading panic. People rarely see: - the follow-ups, - the negotiations, - the supplier chasing, - the sudden revisions, - the late-night problem solving, - or the backup plans behind one successful delivery. When procurement works well, nobody notices. But when one item is late… everyone notices immediately. That’s why I have huge respect for people working in procurement and supply chain. It’s one of the few roles where you need to be strategic, operational, analytical, and patient — every single day. Daniel Weir reacted on thisDaniel Weir reacted on thisAfter a 3yr battle with various health issues and and an enduring desire to return to work and rejoin an industry I love, I sadly have reached a point where a return to employment is impossible. I have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s with Lewy Body Dementia. Not exactly what we had hoped for but it does explain why in spite of 7 surgeries, extensive rehab and visiting numerous specialists, I could not show positive improvement. I want to thank my many colleagues and friends that have worked with and for me over the past 50 years. I am grateful for your support, hard work and yes love as we worked together to service our customers and change the food industry in a positive way. It’s been a heck of a ride! Jay Westover

Daniel Weir liked thisDaniel Weir liked thisI was offered a VP of Operations job with 10 days of PTO. TEN DAYS. That includes sick AND vacation time. When I tried to negotiate, I was told they are a public company so they couldn't offer different PTO options (umm.. I've worked for 3 public companies; PTO is negotiable if you let it be). When I asked if I could get in writing that I could take unpaid time, I was told no. They can’t accommodate that. The CEO also told me that she wished they had better work/life balance, and she knows it's hard especially hard for caretakers and working parents. Yep.. the CEO who was in charge admitted they didn't have good work/life policies. I should have stopped right there, but I was in a job at the time that I wanted to leave and this job had what I wanted (so I thought) The hiring manager assured me she is flexible with time, but I learned long ago if it's not in writing, it's not real. The best part? When I got an offer, the agency recruiter told me she needed an answer the same day the offer was made. I told her I wanted to negotiate the PTO. She told me they wouldn’t. I declined the job. As the holidays are upon us, my kids have been out of school due to a teacher's strike, and after my dad falling ill so suddenly last year: I’m reminded of how important flexibility is. I’m reminded of how important negotiations are. I’m reminded of how important advocating for yourself is and knowing what you’re willing to accept and not is. Sadly, for those who are laid off, you don’t feel you have that power as much because you NEED a job. Sometimes that’s the hardest part of all. I was fortunate to be working and able to make that decision to stay no. But I’ve been laid off where I don't feel as empowered. Even in a rough job market, know your non-negotiables. Being decent isn’t hard. Be a good human
