Craig Gaines liked thisCraig Gaines liked thisToday marks my last day at The Associated Press after 19 years of having the privilege of helping some of the world's best reporters tell important stories -- and sometimes telling them myself -- on one of the globe's largest stages. It was a tough decision to move on but the right one for me at this moment. Dearest to my head and heart has been my work for the past several years as one of the editors of the AP Stylebook, the journalism industry's standard word-usage guide. I've been able, I hope, to leave a mark by writing guidance that gives journalists the world over the tools to cover news with respectful, inclusive, accurate language. I will miss the smart and kind people I worked with and the opportunities the AP gave me. I owe a special shout-out to lead stylebook editor Paula Froke, who hired me in the first place, put me on the stylebook team and is also leaving the cooperative. My career in journalism has taken me from Michigan to D.C. to Minnesota to New York to Pennsylvania and has been bigger and better than I ever dreamed. Now it's time for something else that may or may not involve journalism. I have a few months now to get some DIY home renovations done and ponder what to do in semi-retirement. Stay tuned!

Journalism is not perfect. Journalists make mistakes. The good journalists admit and correct these mistakes. Stories change, sources can lie and evidence can emerge suddenly, painting an entirely new narrative. To put a target on the backs of so called "media offenders" is actively encouraging distrust and creating a dangerous environment for journalists to work. This is not "holding journalists accountable," this is creating an environment of fear where they won't do their jobs just to stay safe.
