Craig Cocca shared thisHappy Father’s Day to all the dads whose lives have been changed by surgery—and to the fathers who dedicate their own lives to caring for others in the OR. Today, I’m thinking about the dad who was able to coach one more Little League season, walk his daughter down the aisle, meet a new grandchild, or simply get back to the moments that matter because a skilled surgeon with da Vinci in their hands helped them recover sooner or gave them more years with the people they love. I’m also thinking about the surgeon dads who spend countless hours in the operating room, often sacrificing time with their own families so they can care for someone else’s. Behind every one of those surgeons is a family that shares in that commitment, supporting the long days, late nights, and missed milestones that come with a calling to heal. At Intuitive, we’re privileged to support surgeons with technology designed to help them deliver exceptional care. But the real impact isn’t measured in procedures or platforms—it’s measured in birthdays celebrated, graduations attended, family vacations taken, and ordinary moments that become extraordinary simply because they’re shared together. Last week, I shared with you how Dr. Jennifer Preston uses Case Insights video review on da Vinci 5 to transform the coaching conversations that take place between faculty and trainees. Today, I'm excited to share how we're enhancing this capability further with the launch of the new Case Insights mobile experience on My Intuitive+. Data-driven insights at one's fingertips have the potential to help surgeons quantify performance, reduce variability, and identify new opportunities for growth. Combined with video review and expert coaching, they can help create more personalized pathways for continuous improvement throughout a surgeon's career. Craig Cocca shared thisOne of the most exciting aspects of surgical innovation isn't just what happens in the operating room — it's how technology can transform surgical education. At Intuitive CONNECT, we had the opportunity to hear Dr. Jennifer Preston share how video review capabilities on da Vinci 5 are fundamentally changing the way she teaches residents and fellows. Her insights reinforced something we've long believed: objective, accessible performance review has the potential to accelerate learning in ways that were previously difficult to achieve. Traditionally, trainees might only have a single opportunity to observe how an experienced surgeon approaches a challenging step, tissue plane, or suture technique. With automatic case recording and easy access to video via the My Intuitive App, residents can now revisit those critical moments repeatedly, compare their performance against reference procedures, and come back to the operating room with highly specific questions and learning objectives. What stood out most was how this capability has elevated the educational conversation. Feedback becomes more precise. Discussions become more meaningful. Learners gain greater ownership of their development by reviewing cases independently and preparing before their next procedure. Dr. Preston described how her residents now compare their operative performance directly against reference videos, analyze key moments of tissue handling, exposure, dissection, retraction, and suturing, and engage in a much deeper level of reflection than was previously possible. As someone passionate about advancing surgical education, it's inspiring to see technology not only support procedural excellence, but also help create more deliberate, data-driven pathways for developing the next generation of surgeons. The Academic Surgeon Leader program at Intuitive CONNECT 2026 embodied all of these qualities. More than 100 academic surgeons and a stellar faculty came together to share how da Vinci 5 and the My Intuitive+ ecosystem are connecting surgeons at a distance using Telepresence, connecting educators and trainees with key performance improvement metrics using Case Insights, connecting academicians with new data science resources, and connecting the sickest patients with more access to minimally invasive surgery than ever before. Across three sessions with Dr. Chris Ducoin and Dr. John Porterfield, the focus was simple: elevate how we teach, learn, and collaborate. We saw high-level technique, real-time decision making, and more importantly, we saw what’s possible when mentorship is no longer limited by geography. From live case discussion to shared best practices and digital tools that support learning between cases. This series highlighted a shift toward a more connected, continuous surgical education that’s transforming the way surgeons learn today. This is what modern surgical training looks like. More access, more collaboration, and fewer boundaries. Every health system on Epic faces the same question: trust Epic’s Patient AI or go 3rd Party? Sutter and Hartford chose opposite answers. My 4 thoughts: The news this week: → Sutter Health was the 1st health system to go-live with Epic's Patient AI (Emmie) embedded in MyChart. Emmie has full access to the patient's record and can help explain test results, book appointments, make payments, etc. via chat. → Hartford Healthcare and K Health announced PatientGPT - a custom Patient AI launchable from MyChart with similar access to the patient's record to help answer questions about test results, but can handle more clinical queries. → Some differences: Emmie is focused more on extending core portal functionality - easier access to test results, payments, scheduling. The Hartford/K Health approach is more focused on patient access and care team communications - directly navigating patients to virtual care, identifying potential medication interactions, and suggesting conversation summaries to copy/paste as messages to the care team. My 4 thoughts: 1/ This is a good reminder that Platform vs Best of Breed will always be alive in enterprise healthcare. As much as IT leaders often say "we want to minimize the number of different interfaces a patient may touch," a health system's approach will ultimately depend on their Digital/IT philosophy and the job to be done. Hartford certainly considered Epic's AI but decided on a faster path to AI for clinical conversations and virtual care. 2/ One reason this happened at Hartford is that it's an extension of an existing partnership. K Health already powers Hartford's 24/7 virtual care platform - which uses an AI-driven pre-visit medical history - so there's existing trust. PatientGPT is also strategically driving patient access to this virtual care platform, and probably better integrated in ways that matter to Hartford. I suspect K Health also enabled more specific clinical customization than Epic would typically allow in Emmie. 3/ We shouldn't expect this to be an Epic-or-Third-Party decision only long-term. There isn't 100% overlap between approaches. I wouldn't be surprised if Hartford also turns on Emmie for specific needs (eg payments) or if Sutter later invests in a more clinical patient AI platform. Even at SeamlessMD, we see a mix: some health systems use our digital care journey platform for every clinical area (and still integrated with MyChart), others use our content delivered by the native Care Companion in MyChart (helps that we’re Epic’s only approved vendor partner for this). We're agnostic, but even I increasingly expect hybrid approaches over time. 4/ Success will largely be determined by impact on patient access/volumes. Does PatientGPT drive more volume to Hartford's virtual care platform? Does Emmie increase payments resolved and appointments scheduled? Or in both cases, does it just lead to more in-basket messages because it created patient anxiety or confusion? Time will tell.
