Chris Savage shared thisOne of the easiest traps in business is thinking that bigger means you should act more like everyone else. I don't think that's true. When Brendan Schwartz and I started Wistia, we had no choice but to trust our instincts. Later, we had data, research, experts, and benchmarks. Those things are important, but they can also convince you to ignore the little voice telling you something doesn't feel right. Looking back, our best decisions started with a feeling we couldn't fully explain. I think that's one of the hardest parts of building a company. As you grow, you get more reasons to stop trusting yourself. Just don't mistake consensus for conviction.

I remember saying: "You're gonna think I'm insane..." But business is just art. It's a blank canvas. I really believe that. Every day you get to start over. Every day you get to decide what to make. Most people think business is about following the rules. I've always thought the fun part is realizing the rules can change. Can you look at a problem in a way no one else has? Can you make something that didn't exist yesterday? That's what I love. Business is one of the few places where creativity gets tested immediately. You put something into the world. People either use it or they don't. You learn something either way. And tomorrow? You get another blank canvas.

Chris Savage shared thisThe most valuable product roadmap I've ever seen isn't a roadmap. It's watching what customers do when you stop telling them how to use the product. We built our AI video editor Remix to help people get cuts of videos faster. Then people started using it in ways we never predicted. Quarterly Business Reviews into movie trailers. ✓ AI-generated highlight reels instead of meeting notes. ✓ Evergreen highlights from interviews that had been collecting dust for years. ✓ None of these people followed a playbook or asked permission. They found workflows that made sense to them. That's the thing about AI products. The best use cases usually aren't the ones you design. They're the ones customers discover. Our job isn't to force everyone down the path we imagined. It's to notice where people naturally go...and make those paths even better. Individually, none of those things matter. Together, they quietly consume your day. Wistia's Sasha F. and Sam Balter joined me on Talking Too Loud to discuss Model Context Protocols (MCPs), and halfway through the conversation I realized we weren't really talking about MCPs anymore. We were talking about what happens when software stops making you learn where to click... ...and starts understanding what you're trying to accomplish. The biggest productivity gain from AI isn't a smarter model. It's removing the friction between an idea and getting it done. That was just one of the ideas that stuck with me from this conversation. Chris Savage shared thisWistia's Head of Production didn't edit this video. At least not the way we've all edited videos for the last 30 years. Chris Lavigne wrote a script. Then, he recorded a bunch of takes, uploaded all the raw footage into our AI video editor Remix, and told it what video he wanted. Remix found the right takes and built the first cut. Then, he just kept talking to it. "Use a different take." "Speed this up." "Throw in some music." A few prompts later, Lavigne had a video. For decades, editing started with a timeline. Now it starts with a sentence. That's a much bigger shift than editing videos faster. It changes who can edit and how quickly you can explore ideas. This product is shaped by you. Suddenly, software knew what was being said, who was speaking, and what topics were covered. Then, LLMs arrived. In that moment video wasn’t just searchable. It became understandable. That changed everything. Instead of asking software to help you edit a video, you can ask it to help you accomplish a goal. "Turn this one-hour product walkthrough into a 90-second highlight." "Pull every moment where we talk about pricing." "Create three LinkedIn clips from this webinar." Video becomes the input. Not just the output. That shift was massive and the idea that's guided everything we've been building with AI over the last year. Our AI video editor Remix is our latest step in that journey. Instead of starting with a timeline, it starts with a conversation. 1. Describe the video you want. 2. Refine it with prompts. 3. Keep going until it feels right. The video below was made using Remix. The biggest change isn't that editing gets faster. It's that you can explore more ideas, try more directions, and build conviction much faster. Product-market fit genuinely feels different...and it'll show up in the data Demo to close rates are the easiest thing to look at for product-market fit right now. Vertical AI startups in our portfolio are seeing 50%+ demo to close rates, even with brand new account executives selling the product. It's happening in every market from AI takeoffs to AI CSR/Voice software to AI procurement solutions. When you see a demo to close rate over 50% chances are you have a jaw dropping customer experience and you should put your foot on the gas. If you're seeing something dramatically lower in mid-market or SMB ACV categories, it's worth revisiting your product and/or your pitch.

Coming out of Vanta Delivers, one thing feels really clear: Customers aren’t asking for more compliance work. They’re asking for a better way to do it. The reality today is a lot of teams are stuck in cycles that repeat over and over again. And as Alex Stamos pointed out in the discussion, all that activity doesn’t always translate to better security outcomes. That’s the frustration we hear most often. And honestly, adding more process on top isn’t the answer. The goal is to take work off the system. If teams can spend less time chasing evidence and answers and more time understanding what actually matters, everything else moves faster. That’s what customers are really asking for. Too many SaaS companies are trying to manufacture a category right now. At seed stage, it feels audacious (and fundable). At Series B+, it still sounds good on a stage... But if your endgame is mid-market and enterprise, the reality can be harsh: ❌ Enterprise buyers don’t typically budget for nascent categories - and are typically quite slow to spend on and test newly established categories. 🫰They budget for problems they already know how to fund...the ones that have the leadership/procurement paths pre-carved out. That’s why category creation is almost always boom or bust. You’re not just selling software; you’re teaching buyers to name a problem, shift priorities, and convince slow moving enterprise bureaucracies to approve net-new budgets. Most companies don’t have the time or capital to push that uphill for prolonged periods of time. Slotting into a known category may sound less visionary, but in enterprise it often wins faster... ✅ Budgets already exist. ✅ Stakeholders already understand the space. 🤝 Your job is to show why you’re the obvious choice - clearer, faster, better, yada, yada... you get it Known budgets + defined buyers? Slot in, then differentiate ruthlessly. Unnamed problem + no budget line? You’re playing a long game. Make sure you have the war chest to survive it and the end outcome is worth it (tbf, typically with VC companies these go hand in hand). Snowflake and Gong pulled off category creation because they had capital, time, and undeniable customer impact. Snowflake's CMO, Denise Persson has talked about the extreme messaging consistency and endurance that was required to come out the other side. Most don’t have the time.⏳ Datadog, Zoom, and Okta won big without inventing a category. They just dominated one that mattered to enterprises. Category creation has become a crutch for founders and marketers. In enterprise, it should be the exception, not the default.
