It has been the absolute honor of my life to serve as the 16th Administrator of the
Bonneville Power Administration. When I arrived at Bonneville in 1990, I found a community of caring people and embarked on a career journey that I never could have imagined.
If 35 years have taught me anything, it is this: the only thing I can do by myself in any leadership role after day one is fail. A leader is entirely dependent on those around them. Success is never individual; it is collective.
In August 2010, I wrote down a philosophy that has guided me ever since: Seek to understand, serve, and be open to influence.
Leadership isn’t about taking the wheel every time; it’s about being true to yourself and present for those who place their trust in you. My goal was never to micromanage, but to be “micro-aware” while providing the freedom and respect necessary for talented people to do their jobs.
To my Bonneville family: you gave this organization everything you had—with kindness, toughness, and honor. Together, we remained strong through a global pandemic, lowered rates during a challenging economy, advanced historic agreements, and positioned the region to meet exponential load growth.
But what I will remember most is not just what we did; I will remember how we did it. We had a unity of purpose that made even the toughest challenges manageable. People often say this job is tough—and it is—but it is so much more manageable when you have a workforce like this one. When I needed strength, I found it in my team. When I needed inspiration, I found it in our workforce. I found wisdom from the Northwest delegation and our customers. When I needed a reminder of what I was fighting for, I found it in the encouragement of the tribal community and our stakeholders.
So, as of today, I’m moving on. In a chronological sense, I am moving on. But in every other sense, I am staying in the mindset, the moments, and the feelings I have experienced with all of you.
I look forward to seeing you in the next episode. God bless.
