Last month, the MVA departmental bill (SB 38) was presented to the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. This reform aims to simplify the enrollment process for Marylanders interested in the MVA's ignition interlock program (IIP) instead of facing a mandatory license suspension. Currently, Marylanders aged 21 and older who violate an alcohol restriction on their driver's license must request an administrative hearing to modify their suspension to allow for IIP enrollment. In contrast, those under 21 can access this option immediately through the MVA. Updating the process to encourage more Marylanders to enroll in IIP stops drunk drivers right from the start while teaching corrective behavior that has a lasting impact on participants as studies show reduced rates of recidivism by interlock users.
