Even Dogs Can Make AI 🐕🤖 A walk, a daughter, a dog — and a simple way to explain AI This evening, my daughter (Grace Johns) and I were out walking our dog. Like many parent–child walks, the conversation wandered — life, work, the future — and eventually landed on AI. I asked her a simple question: “Do you know the five layers of AI?” She paused. Thought about it. Then smiled and said, “Can you give me a clue?" So I gave her a clue — completely improvised, inspired by the dog happily pulling on the leash: “Even Dogs Can Make AI.” She looked at me like I had completely lost it! Then I broke it down. 🧠 The 5 Layers of AI (Made Simple)... Even Dogs Can Make AI (E D C M A) It turns out this silly acronym is a surprisingly effective way to explain how the AI world is actually structured. ⚡ 1. Energy AI runs on electricity. Massive amounts of it. Before we talk about models or magic, we need to talk about power generation, grids, and sustainability. Without energy, AI doesn’t think, learn, or respond. No power. No AI. 🏢 2. Data Centers This is where AI lives. Data centers house the infrastructure — servers, networking, cooling systems — that make large-scale computation possible. These facilities are the backbone of the AI economy. You can think of them as AI’s “home.” 🧮 3. Compute This is the muscle. GPUs, TPUs, specialized chips — this is the raw computational horsepower required to train and run AI systems. Compute determines speed, scale, and capability. More compute = more powerful AI (at a cost). 🧠 4. Models This is the “brain.” Large language models, vision models, prediction models — this is where algorithms, training, and intelligence come together. Models turn raw compute into something that can reason, generate, and assist. This is the layer most people think of as AI. 📱 5. Applications This is where humans actually interact with AI. Chatbots, copilots, diagnostics, automation tools, analytics platforms — applications turn AI into real-world value. If users don’t see it or touch it, it doesn’t matter. This is where AI becomes useful. Why This Matters: By the time I finished explaining it, my daughter said something that stuck with me: “That actually makes AI feel… understandable and explainable!” And that’s the point! AI doesn’t have to be mysterious or intimidating.
