And last week, I received my Italian passport through jure sanguinis, citizenship by descent through my great-grandfather's bloodline. It took five years of paperwork, translations, genealogical research, and patience. But here's why it was worth every moment: The practical benefits: • Freedom to live and work anywhere in the 27 EU countries • One of the most powerful passports in the world for travel • A retirement plan with real options in Italy or across Europe • Healthcare and social benefits across the EU But the real reason I pursued this? My son. This isn't just about me. Citizenship passes down. The doors that opened for me through my great-grandfather's heritage are now open for my child, and his children. We often think about leaving our kids financial assets. But citizenship? That's generational wealth of a different kind. It's the freedom to study at European universities, to work in global markets, to build a life wherever opportunity calls. If you have ancestry that qualifies you for citizenship by descent (Italian, Irish, Polish, Portuguese, and many others), I encourage you to explore it. Yes, the process is long. Yes, it requires dedication. But you're not just doing it for yourself. You're opening doors for generations you may never meet. Have you pursued or considered citizenship by descent? Bryn Dole liked thisBryn Dole liked thisIt's time for me to move on from Intel after nearly three decades🙂. Time does fly, doesn't it? In late December 1996, I flew from Purdue to the storied "Silicon Valley." I remember staying at a sketchy Travelodge next to a Starving Musician on El Camino Real and spending New Year's Eve watching Metallica from the nosebleeds of the Shark Tank. That new year marked the beginning of my internship and career at Intel. Now I pen the epilogue of that tale as a newly minted Intel retiree (and happily married father of four). Like many stories, it spanned three acts: the character establishment of a naïve midwestern photonics engineer, the rising action of a technology evangelist traveling the world, and the climax of a strategy program director joining the leadership team of the organization he grew up in and loved: Intel Labs. The common thread was helping technologists to realize their vision, and I will cherish the characters in this story the most. I had the privilege to assist, advise, and learn from hundreds of researchers and engineers spanning every domain of information technology, from junior researchers to senior Fellows and CTOs. Their passion to invent a better future fueled my own. To my Intel friends, colleagues, and mentors, I give my thanks. It was more than just a chapter of my life; it was a full volume, and you made it compelling and complete. The sequel will have a lot to live up to…but I'm excited to find out.

The recent Waymo testimony making the rounds isn’t really about robotaxis. It’s about the reality gap between AI demos and AI at scale in the real world. In Senate testimony earlier this month, Waymo confirmed that when its autonomous vehicles encounter ambiguous situations, they can request guidance from remote human agents. The vehicles remain in control, but humans are still in the loop. This shouldn’t be read as “AI failure.” It should be read as a reminder of how hard real-world deployment actually is. Every serious AI system that touches safety, money, or operations ends up with: • human fallback layers • escalation paths • edge-case handling • governance and oversight That’s not a bug. That’s operational maturity. The lesson for leaders isn’t “autonomy is fake.” It’s this: scaling AI safely is less about models, and more about systems. Real-world AI = model + data + workflow + humans + policy + monitoring. If you ignore any of those layers, you don’t get innovation. You get incidents. We’re entering the phase of AI where credibility won’t come from benchmarks or demos, but from disciplined deployment: where safety, transparency, and operational design matter as much as algorithms.
