Building the Embedded Banking Layer: Treasury Prime’s Chris Dean speaks with RJ Lumba Most fintech products people use every day are built by tech companies, even though the underlying risk still sits with banks. That gap is where embedded banking infrastructure lives, and it’s the gap Treasury Prime operates in. Founded in 2017, Treasury Prime provides software that allows banks to run fintech programs as a distinct line of business. Co-Founder and CEO Chris Dean explains how banks remain the regulated entity and customer of record, while fintechs focus on product design and distribution. The model has appealed particularly to community and regional banks looking to reach national fintech markets without rebuilding core systems or absorbing unfamiliar operational risk. That structure has scaled through network effects. Treasury Prime supports more than 2 million accounts, moves over $10 billion in money daily, and connects fintechs to a network of 15+ bank partners. As volumes grow, fintechs often operate across multiple banks, allowing deposits to be split and concentration risk managed—an issue that becomes unavoidable at scale. Dean also addresses why incentive alignment matters more than speed, why Treasury Prime stayed profitable rather than chasing capital, and why hiring moves slowly in infrastructure businesses.
