Most people don’t realize RMF and GRC are two different lanes. I talk to so many people who reach out asking how to get into GRC. But here’s the truth, what I do is RMF, and that’s not always the same thing. RMF (Risk Management Framework): This is mainly in the federal/government space. You’re often dealing with classified systems, DISA, ATO packages, POA&Ms, and federal controls. To even get in the door, most roles require a clearance and certifications like Security+. RMF is the process the government uses to secure systems and keep missions moving. GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance): This is mainly in the private sector. It focuses on ensuring organizations meet compliance standards (like ISO, SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS), manage risks, and build policies and frameworks to protect the business. You don’t necessarily need a clearance. Instead, you need to understand frameworks, risk, compliance reporting, and how to align security with business goals. Both paths are valuable, but they are different skill sets, different environments, and even different career entry points. If you’re looking to break in, the first question you need to answer is: Do I want to work in the federal space (RMF) or private sector (GRC)? That decision determines everything about your path forward. #RMF #GRC #Cybersecurity
