Bill Martin liked thisThe Internet of Things or IOT has been around for a while. Understanding it, embracing it, and innovating with it are key components to exploring the Art of the Possible with IOT. Last Thursday, we had the benefit and privilege of having Amazon Web Services (AWS) deliver our Innovation Insight to help us explore of the Art of the Possible with IOT. Senior Manager of Emerging Trends, Bill Durham, walked us through different use cases inside and outside of the financial sector. These were juxtaposed with predictions around IOT growth, such as 40 billion devices will be connected by the end of 2023. He shared additional guidance on layering pragmatic security solutions to support IOT. We hope this Innovation Insights session on IOT inspired some promising ideas we can explore with this technology. Special thanks to Bill, Lisa Crow and Susan Reed (Lonngren) for their unwavering support to help make this session a reality and support the Innovation program at Raymond James. We also celebrated the winner of the best NLP idea from the previous Innovation Insight session. Congratulations to Omar Lopez, MS for his winning idea. Well done. The Art of the Possible continues to inspire our firm, most especially in ways that will bring greater value to our Business and ultimately our clients. Bill Martin liked thisWe continued exploring the Art of the Possible this week with our Innovation Insights series on an extremely relevant and popular topic: Generative AI. Responsibly harnessing its power and potential is of keen interest to the firm. On Thursday, we were lucky to have the Godfather of Generative AI, Igor Jablokov, provide a three part discussion on the history of Generative AI, what it is & its benefits and risks, and a thoughtful & tailored simulation of how to use Generative AI within wealth management. Generative AI is a very popular technology right now and we thank you, Igor, for showing us Generative AI's potential. We also thank him for a presentation with speaking points you cannot search for on the web. Given how much information is available on Generative AI, it was nice to learn some more unique and unpublished concepts about its roots and likely future. I particularly liked the emphasis on how it will bring immediate value to jobs and will not eliminate jobs. The future is very bright at Raymond James as we explore the Art of the Possible with Generative AI. Innovation is alive and well at the firm and I am excited for our future. Looking forward to all the great Generative AI ideas we receive in the coming weeks! Bill Martin liked thisThis past Thursday, our Innovation Insights series continued on the topic of 5G. We are grateful to Eric Chadwick from Verizon for presenting 5G and its potential. The “Art of the Possible” could be seen through two of several financial sector use cases that were covered tied to low latency trading and enhanced branch operations. I hope many revisit and study these use cases as well as others shared by Eric. We were also very lucky to have our own brilliant Director of Network Security, William Hess, PhD., layout the vision and potential for 5G at Raymond James. I was particularly grateful to William for discussing the linkage between IoT and 5G as well as the discussion on home use of 5G. With 5G having favorable implications to availability, efficiency, and bandwidth, I am really happy we covered this topic as part of our Innovation Insights series. The future is very bright at Raymond James as we explore the Art of the Possible and how we explore 5G bringing value to the firm. Bill Martin liked thisRecently, we had a rather thought provoking and interesting Innovation Insights Session which focused on the intersection of ESG and technology innovation. The session was a collaboration between the teams in Raymond James Innovation and ESG – thanks to Heather Knable and Kristi L. Sutherland for that. The session itself was presented by Christine Morath from EY who has a wealth of knowledge in this area. We are grateful to her for helping us think of “Art of the Possible”. The session included very interesting discussions on data center optimization, quantum computing opportunities, and digital carbon trading infrastructure. There is a lot to consider when the domains of ESG and innovation intersect. Exploration of this space must be thoughtful & thorough and requires commitment. I, for one, am very interested to see the direction technology innovation takes with respect to ESG. I am glad we explored the “Art of the Possible” tied to it. I’ve been using a side project to bring my Java skills fully up to date with the latest tooling. On the dev side it’s Java 25, Spring Boot 4, Maven, Flyway for DB migrations, JaCoCo for test coverage, and Testcontainers for integration tests, so the whole GitHub CI pipeline is on current versions. For runtime I’m running everything in Docker with PostgreSQL 18, Redis 8, and RabbitMQ 4 via Docker Compose, which keeps the stack consistent and easy to spin up. The UI is Thymeleaf and Bootstrap (yeah I know that's a bad idea - it's purely to keep the whole thing in a single repo for this demo). Normally I’d use a separate frontend (e.g. React or similar) and keep the backend as an API. It’s a flash-sales–style demo app (products, sales, orders, async processing with RabbitMQ, caching with Redis). If you’re raising up your Java/Spring stack knowledge, then building something real with this kind of setup is a great way to do it.
