Underdevelopment rarely looks like failure. It looks like stability. Fewer questions. Safer decisions. Less ownership. Lower standards. Not because people lost potential. Because the system stopped signaling they were expected to become more valuable. Training isn't a perk. It's a ceiling-setter. The real cost isn't when trained people leave. Today, I walked out of 7-Eleven for the last time as an employee — and I am carrying 4 years of memories with me. When I joined, I knew I was signing up to build digital products. What I did not know was how much this place — and its people — would shape me. Together, we launched the redesigned version of the 7-Eleven app and watched it grow to serve millions of customers. We took 7-Eleven Gold Pass from 0 to 1, alongside several other impactful product launches. From my first day reading subscription research papers to launch-day nerves, refreshing dashboards — the quiet pride when the numbers started climbing, and the thrill of our work earning a Webby Award nomination. 7-Eleven gave me far more than a career chapter. It gave me friendships I will carry with me wherever I go. As for what's next — more on that soon. But today, I just want to say thank you to the leaders, mentors and amazing people I got to work with every day. Stop trying to prompt better. Start writing down what good means. Here's the joke of AI design work…we keep treating the model like it betrayed our standards, when we never gave it any standards to betray. We prompt. We get something plausible. We say, "No, not like that." Then we prompt again. Then again. Then again. Congratulations. We have reinvented design critique as a slot machine. The durable AI skill isn't prompt craft. It's externalized judgment. Prompting helps you ask. Encoding helps the system remember what you refuse to compromise. It turns what you repeat all day into reusable instructions, examples, constraints, and acceptance criteria the model reads before it works. A good prompt still matters. But without encoded judgment it's brittle. You re-explain the same standard every session, and the model forgets it when the window closes. Carmen Rincon showed the difference. She spent a few days writing down every Figma Plugin API quirk that broke her AI builds, then put them in one file the model reads before it writes code. API errors went from 6+ per build to 0. Builds dropped from 10 minutes of retries to one. (Her numbers. Test them on your own setup.) She didn't get better at begging the machine. She got better at writing down what she already knew. The AI is disposable. The standards are not. The job was never to make the screen look nice. It's always been judgment. AI doesn't remove that job. It exposes whether you can articulate it. Nielsen Norman Group made a similar point this month: the first move with AI output is defining the criteria that decide whether it's acceptable. Criteria are where authorship becomes executable. This is the spec-first shift in design. The spec isn't paperwork. It's the contract humans, agents, and engineers build against. An agent doesn't need a prettier description of the goal. It needs constraints, the negative space of what it must not do, and a way to check its work. Leave those ambiguous and it treats the ambiguity as permission. And here's what stings: the model can't read your face. It can't infer your bar from the 12 things you didn't say. So the work changes. Not from judgment to automation. From private judgment to durable judgment. Start with one "Good Means" file. Four sections: 1. Repeated corrections. Every AI mistake you fix twice becomes a rule. 2. Non-negotiables. Concrete standards, not values language. Don't write "be accessible." Write: "every interactive element has a visible focus state." 3. Product context. Who this serves, what the product values, what the experience has to protect. 4. Acceptance criteria. Pick one screen or flow. Define what separates finished from plausible. That's the move. Not better prompting. Better memory for judgment. The future isn't designers whispering better spells into the machine. It's designers writing standards down so clearly the machine has fewer excuses.
