⚠️ Important update for California business owners in 2026 Starting January 1, 2026, the state minimum wage in California will increase to $16.90/hour. Because exempt employee salary thresholds are tied to the state minimum wage, this also means the minimum annual salary for many exempt executive, administrative and professional employees will rise to $70,304/year (≈ $1,352/week). If your exempt employees are earning below this threshold, they may no longer qualify for exemption — which could create overtime pay obligations, misclassification risks, and possible penalties under wage-and-hour laws.
