Kettering Health is elevating its ability to diagnose and monitor coronary artery disease by offering a first-of-its-kind, FDA-approved fluorine-18 radiopharmaceutical imaging agent called Flyrcado™ (flurpiridaz F18). Flyrcado™, known scientifically as flurpiridaz F-18, is an injectable radiopharmaceutical imaging agent designed to assess how well the heart functions under stress. The drug offers high quality diagnostic capabilities compared to other imaging drugs due to chemical properties that allow it to produce higher quality images on PET scans. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that replaces a diseased aortic valve through a small incision, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery. This milestone represents 1,500 patients who have benefited from a faster recovery and a quicker return to the activities they enjoy. Arif Sheikh liked thisArif Sheikh liked thisNobody took the consultant role away from radiology. Radiology handed it back. Ask a surgeon when they last called a radiologist before ordering a study, not after. Ask a treating physician when a radiologist last walked into a tumor board with an opinion instead of a stack of images to narrate. Most will struggle to remember. Not because they stopped wanting it. Because the profession stopped offering it as a default. The report became the product. Turnaround time became the metric. Volume became the business model. Every incentive in modern imaging rewards a radiologist for reading the next study, not for picking up the phone about the one they just finished. A clinical consultant interrupts a referring physician's day with a question or a recommendation. A report generator waits to be read, if it is read at all, and moves on. This was not imposed by hospital administrators or insurance companies. It was built, study by study, by a specialty that optimized for throughput because throughput was what got measured and what got paid. The skill never disappeared. Radiologists still know more about what an image means, and what it does not mean, than almost anyone else in the room. What disappeared was the expectation that they would say so out loud, unprompted, to the person who needed to hear it. The consequence shows up quietly. A referring physician stops calling because the last three calls went to voicemail. A tumor board stops reserving a seat because no one from imaging has occupied it in years. A hospital stops treating radiology as a clinical partner and starts treating it as a cost center that produces PDFs. None of this happens in a single bad decision. It accumulates, one unreturned page and one unattended meeting at a time, until the absence looks permanent. Getting the role back will not come from a memo asking radiologists to be more collaborative. It will come from radiologists choosing, case by case, to act like consultants again. Call before the study is even finished if the clinical question is unclear. Show up to the meeting uninvited if the case matters. Write the addendum that changes management, not just the one that satisfies compliance. The image has not changed. The interpretation has not gotten easier. This is a gift that will continue to power what we can do at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute today, while expanding what is possible tomorrow. I am so grateful to both Jeri and Bobby for their contribution to this monumental piece of history for our organization, and for their steadfast dedication to our mission. As the largest chair in Ohio State history, it will allow us to be even more innovative in our approach to cancer research. With that in mind, we will be able to move faster towards real impact for our patients through new discoveries. Thanks to the leadership and support of The Ohio State University President Ravi Bellamkonda, The Ohio State University Medical Center CEO John Warner, MD, and The Ohio State University Provost Trevor Brown, the event was both memorable and fitting for the significance of the occasion.
