They can attack our status. They will never erase our story. Last week, I watched Ayiti (Haiti) score two goals on one of the biggest stages in the world. FiFA World Cup. I wasn't just watching a soccer match. I was watching my country. I was watching generations of resilience, sacrifice, and pride represented before millions of people. For a few beautiful moments, all I could think was, Look at Ayiti Look at us. As a Haitian woman, there are moments that remind you exactly where you come from. This was one of them. Which is why it has been so heartbreaking to watch what has followed. Thousands of Haitians who built lives in this country are now facing uncertainty after the Supreme Court allowed the administration to end legal protections for many Haitians who are here legally. Then came these words from Megyn Kelly: "Go home. Get out. We know our country's better than yours. That's because we filled it with our work ethic and our culture and our values. You being here only dilutes it for us... We don't want you. We don't care if you're offended. Get out. Go home. Go back to f*cking Haiti." I find myself wondering: At what point will we truly hold hatred and racism accountable? Too often, prejudice is repackaged as policy, and cruelty is defended as conviction. We debate immigration, but sometimes what we're witnessing goes far beyond policy disagreements. Let's call it what it is. It's hatred. It's dehumanization. And we're all watching it unfold in real time. I was born in Haiti. I am produly Haitian. I am an American Citizen . But above all, I am the daughter of a people whose legacy cannot be erased. When I think of courage, I think of Haiti. When I think of resilience, I think of Haiti. When I think of freedom, I think of the first independent Black republic and the first nation in history to successfully abolish slavery through revolution. Our story did not begin with hardship. Our story began with liberation. That is why no administration, no court ruling, and no hateful rhetoric can define who we are. I think of the Haitians rebuilding communities after unimaginable disasters. I think of the Haitians serving in hospitals, classrooms, boardrooms, and businesses across the world. I think of the Haitian entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, and dreamers who continue to rise despite every obstacle placed before them. I am one of them and I will continue to proudly represent us. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to present at the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) World Congress in Bergen, Norway. My presentation, “Narrative-Informed Collaborative Care: A Systemic and Narrative Framework for Perinatal Care,” builds on my work in medical family therapy and the development of the NICC framework. In the weeks since, I’ve found myself returning to one central question: how often are important parts of patients’ stories left unaddressed in medical care — particularly during the perinatal period? Much of this work has grown out of both research and lived clinical experience, where even brief interactions between physicians and patients can shape how care is understood, delivered, and experienced. What continues to stand out is how small shifts in language, curiosity, and collaboration can meaningfully change not only patient experience, but also how providers engage with their work.
