This international award recognizes organizations and individuals advancing hydrogen as an aerospace propulsion fuel and energy carrier for aircraft and space applications. Named after the pioneering astronautics visionary Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, it celebrates those shaping the future of hydrogen-powered flight. The award was presented in June at the IAHE Annual conference. We are humbled to join an exceptional group of previous recipients, including NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Airbus, Iwatani Corporation, and Aerovironment Inc to name a few. This recognition reflects the dedication of the Hydroplane team and our mission to make practical hydrogen-electric propulsion a reality for the next generation of aviation. From developing technologies that enabled NASA’s missions to Mars to pioneering hydrogen-powered aviation as CEO of Hydroplane Ltd., Dr. Sengupta has spent her career advancing innovation at the intersection of aerospace and sustainable transportation. 🌟 As a member of the CEET, Dr. Sengupta is proud to contribute her expertise in transportation decarbonization while gaining a global perspective on the renewable energy transition. She values the CEET's ability to bring together diverse regional and economic perspectives, helping bridge clean transportation technologies with the energy systems needed to support them. ✈️ During the interview, Dr. Sengupta emphasized that achieving zero-emission aviation will require more than breakthrough technologies. While battery systems can support the electrification of smaller vehicles, larger modes of transport such as aviation, shipping, trucking, and rail will require hydrogen fuel cell technology to enable deep decarbonization. As she noted for green hydrogen, the technology can be available but without the infrastructure to produce and deliver green hydrogen at scale, widespread adoption will remain out of reach. Expanding renewable energy capacity, scaling green hydrogen production, and increasing public investment will be critical to enabling this transition. 💡 Looking ahead, she envisions today's work on hydrogen-powered small aircraft laying the foundation for the decarbonization of larger commercial and cargo aviation. Furthermore, consumers will play an important role in accelerating the energy transition given that market demand for cleaner technologies can help drive investment and innovation. 🌍 Above all, Dr. Sengupta remains optimistic about climate action. "What gives me the most hope is young people," she says, pointing to a new generation of engineers and innovators increasingly motivated by protecting the planet and advancing decarbonization.
