Real-time average price: $140 per megawatt hour. ISONE, similarly thin on clean generation, landed at $95. ERCOT, above 30% clean power, paid $40. Same heatwave. Same demand spike. A 3.5x price spread. Full lineup: NYISO: 1% clean, $140/MWh ISONE: 1% clean, $95/MWh PJM: 4% clean, $82/MWh MISO: 11% clean, $134/MWh SPP: 28% clean, $58/MWh ERCOT: 34% clean, $40/MWh MISO is the outlier worth sitting with. Double-digit clean share, yet priced close to NYISO. Its own reliability monitor has flagged why. Wind output there falls to a fraction of nameplate during summer peak hours, exactly when the grid needs it most. Clean percentage on a slide isn’t the same as clean megawatts clearing at 5pm in July. That’s the real variable. Not clean versus fossil. Fuel diversification, and whether the clean capacity actually shows up when demand peaks. Gas-heavy grids meet heatwave demand by dispatching their most expensive peaker plants. Every added degree pushes the marginal price higher. Grids running wind, solar, and storage that actually perform during peak hours have more cheap megawatts ahead of those peakers in the stack. This lands in the middle of a live fight over who’s responsible for rising electricity bills. Data centers get blamed. Clean energy retirements get blamed. Gas prices get blamed. The grids that diversified, and whose clean capacity actually cleared under stress, got hit the least when demand spiked. That’s not an ideology. That’s a hedge. Andrew Goodale reposted thisAndrew Goodale reposted thisI had the pleasure of being on the Commonwealth Club Climate One podcast this week, talking about how we can get datacenters a) connected to the grid, and b) be good grid citizens who benefit their communities rather than harm them. I was featured alongside KeShaun Pearson from Memphis Community Against Pollution, journalist Rebecca McCarthy, and Jason Plautz from E&E News. Hearing KeShaun speak directly about what his community is experiencing from datacenter-driven power plant emissions in Memphis made that potential for local harm concrete in a way that policy conversations rarely do. Powering a datacenter from the grid firstly avoids creating a situation where a local community has to host a huge fleet of power plants and suffer from their emissions. Secondly, it means that the baseline emissions profile is no worse than the grid overall, and creates opportunities for datacenters to fund more renewable energy development (or pay for VPPs!), helping to reduce the carbon mix overall. Thirdly, asking the datacenter to provide load flexibility enables the grid to make better use of variable renewables and of limited transmission capacity - using power or charging batteries when clean power is more available, and self-powering during times when the grid is more congested. Advocates for fully offgrid power sometimes position it as an affordability solution - keeping datacenters off the grid so that they don't drive up power bills for other customers. But it's a false economy - some communities disproportionately bear the costs. We should ask the grid to do its job - provide power fairly and reliably - and structure tariffs that encourage efficiency and require large loads to pay their own way. And we're taking that crisis as a perfect opportunity to modernize the grid to promote affordability and decarbonization. That puts us in a position to grow our engineering team. I'd love to hear from folks who might be inspired by that mission. We are a tight knit, kindler-gentler sort of team who've built a lot of trust (amongst ourselves and with customers) yet we're eager to welcome some newcomers. We are looking to fill a couple roles that I know many folks I've worked with could hit out of the park: 1. An infrastructure engineer (https://lnkd.in/gNTpyGjY), a SWE/SRE hybrid role shaping our compute environment in every aspect from developer tools to core APIs to site reliability, as we grow our cloud based platform to handle both large-scale grid planning studies and real-time orchestration of flexibly-connected grid assets. 2. That’s the test result Ben Wheeler (VP of Product Development, Verrus) shared on Episode 2 of DCD’s Grid Interactive Data Centers series. The work was done with the National Lab of the Rockies (formerly NREL), using grid input directly from MISO, Xcel Energy, and other utility partners. Why it matters: most industry conversation about data center flexibility still defaults to virtual flexibility — workload shifting and job scheduling. The Verrus result is on the physical side: facility hardware responding to grid signals, fast enough to count as a dispatchable resource, with no compute curtailment required. Physical flexibility, paired with the planning framework (hour-by-hour analysis, day-ahead operating limits) and the procurement structure (BYOC), is what a flexible grid connection looks like end-to-end. Andrew Goodale reposted thisAndrew Goodale reposted thisCon Edison is simultaneously blocking community battery interconnection in New York City and being asked by state regulators to solve a reliability shortfall that those same batteries could address. Let that sink in. In August, ConEd froze applications from battery storage developers following a surge of project proposals in the outer boroughs. It has since lobbied state legislators, penned op-eds, and selected an interconnection study methodology that effectively shuts down new community batteries across broad swaths of NYC. There are hundreds of speculative projects sitting in its queue, inflating costs and timelines for everyone. At the same time, the NY Public Service Commission (Rory Christian, CEM, CEA) directed ConEd last December to develop a Reliability Contingency Plan to address anticipated grid shortfalls in New York City — and explicitly told it to prioritize non-emitting solutions that are cost-effective and fast to deploy. Community batteries are almost definitionally the best answer to that description. They can be built in 6 to 18 months. They can target exactly the substations and feeders under stress. The market has already demonstrated it can deliver them at scale — ConEd's own queue is proof of that demand. So what would ConEd look like if it were genuinely trying to keep rates affordable? It would treat a crowded interconnection queue as market validation, not an excuse to slow things down. It would publish circuit-level hosting capacity data so developers could self-select to locations of highest grid value. It would run competitive procurements for distribution deferral. Force batteries to compete against substation upgrades, shifting construction risk off ratepayers. It would structure contracts that let batteries stack revenue streams, driving down costs further. It would work with regulators on a structured queue cleanup instead of a freeze that protects speculative projects and gives the utility cover to do nothing. None of this is happening. And it pisses everyone off. Utilities want to do it their way, the expensive way. A private battery that defers a $50 million substation upgrade saves ratepayers money. Under the current regulatory compact, ConEd wants to maximize earnings for shareholders at their ratepayer's expense. The DPS Reliability Contingency Plan proceeding (Case 25-E-0764) is an opportunity to force transparency. Regulators could require ConEd to show its work — to demonstrate that it evaluated battery deferral for every near-term capital project and explain publicly why it chose otherwise. ConEd knows the value of distributed batteries. They have been pondering how their business model should change with the REV process with Audrey Zibelman in 2014. New York's ratepayers deserve a regulatory system that focuses on affordability.

Andrew Goodale reposted thisAndrew Goodale reposted thisThe reason 36 Governors races are talking so much about electricity is that 21.5 million American households — 1 in 6 — are behind on at least one energy bill. Rates are rising at twice the rate of inflation. And the electric utility industry only knows how to spend more money — $178 billion in capital expenditures in 2024, up from $50 billion in 2003. The grid got less reliable. Bills kept climbing. Something is structurally broken. Investor-owned utilities make money by deploying capital, not by delivering outcomes. Every dollar spent on poles, wires, and power plants earns them a guaranteed return. They have no incentive to use what we have already paid for more efficiently. Contrast that with rural electric co-ops and municipal utilities that have much more affordable rates despite having lower density. IOUs have grid utilization rates of about 40% while new generation is waiting for years to get permission to start construction. Meanwhile we are not currently short of generation. We are short of wires to move it. And instead of fixing the bottlenecks with next generation technologies, we deliberately find the most expensive way to solve nothing. We need to do things differently. Two levers we know will work. The first is reducing unproductive investment by deploying technologies that extract more from existing infrastructure. Advanced conductors can double line capacity on existing towers at half the cost of new builds. Dynamic line ratings can add 15 to 40 percent of capacity in months. Virtual power plants aggregating new batteries, EVs, and smart appliances consumers are already buying to provide gigawatts of flexible capacity by 2030. There is another 55 gigawatts of backup generators behind hospitals that are already built waiting for a way to get paid to be helpful. Together these tools could stabilize annual IOU capex. First rule of getting out of a hole is to stop digging. The second lever is growing electricity sales across a better-utilized grid. Bills are a function of fixed costs divided across the customer base. Data centers, EVs, industrial electrification can lower electricity bills if they increase grid utilization. They are opportunities to dilute fixed costs across a larger base, lowering the per-unit burden on every household, if the grid can serve them efficiently. The companies solving this exist today: CTC Global, TS Conductor, LineVision, Voltus, Renew Home, Base Power Company, WeaveGrid, Carrier HVAC, Sparkfund, Edo, Budderfly, and many others. They are deploying, right now, the tools that reduce capex while unlocking capacity. The path to affordable electricity is unlocking more capacity with smarter investment, better-utilized infrastructure, and a regulatory model that pays utilities to deliver outcomes. Everyone wants to win in this moment. Lets give Governors sensible ideas to help out the 21.5 million households that want the dignity of being able to pay their energy bills.

That was the question at the heart of Episode 2 of DatacenterDynamics’ Grid Interactive Data Centers series, where Astrid Atkinson joined Varun Mehra (Technical Lead for Data Center Flexibility, Google) and Ben Wheeler (VP of Product Development, Verrus) to talk through how flexibility is changing the way data centers connect to the grid. The panel moved past the assumption that anchored traditional demand response — that a data center will trade power for a lower bill. For a hyperscale operator, the math doesn't work that way. Keeping a multi-hundred-megawatt asset utilized is worth far more than anything that could be saved on the energy charge. What matters is speed to power. A site that can flex during a handful of constrained hours per year can connect years ahead of one that asks for fully firm capacity. In a recent Camus and Google study of sites across a representative PJM utility, 1 to 3% annual flexibility unlocked up to several hundred megawatts of additional interconnection capacity per site. Making that real takes three things working in concert, as Varun outlined on the panel: a voluntary incentive aligned with speed to capacity, clear guardrails on the depth and frequency of curtailment, and a planning and dispatch model that incorporates flexible load as a recognized resource. The work is already underway. PJM's large load task force is developing a framework for firm-plus-flexible interconnection. ERCOT has integrated data center flexibility into transmission dispatch. Andrew Goodale liked thisAndrew Goodale liked thisThe IRS just raised the standard business mileage reimbursement rate to 76 cents per mile, only the fifth mid-year adjustment in two decades. The reason: gasoline prices up 38% since January, driven directly by the Strait of Hormuz closure. That rate represents the fully-loaded cost of operating a gasoline car, including depreciation, insurance, maintenance, fuel, tires, oil changes. Waymo just reconfirmed that they will be able to profitably drive you anywhere you want to go for 75 cents per mile by 2030, 1 cent cheaper than driving yourself. The crossover point is now in sight. And the most extreme superusers aren't rural commuters. They're professional drivers. Full-time Uber or Lyft driver average 50,000 miles a year. A typical NYC taxicab drives 70,000 miles annually. There are 2 million active ride-hailing drivers in the US. Every full-time driver among them is being crushed by the Hormuz premium right now. They only make net earnings of $11 to $18 an hour. This is why folks are now mandating that ride-hailing and taxis switch to EVs by 2030. They're going directly after the most concentrated gasoline consumption in the entire fleet. One electrified NYC taxi displaces the gasoline consumption of six surburban minivans. Now the generational shift, today's teenagers are the first generation for whom a driver's license is optional. Licensing rates among 16 to 19 year olds have fallen from over 80% in the late 1980s to under 60% today. They Ubered to prom. They DoorDashed dinner. They never needed a car to have a social life. And now, as they enter adulthood, comes a fully autonomous vehicle that costs less per mile than the IRS says it costs to own a gasoline car. They won't need to bankrupt themselves with car ownership. The oil industry's most loyal future customers, teenagers who would have bought their first car are climbing into an autonomous electric vehicle and never looking back. Every generation that comes of age without a driver's license is a generation whose lifetime oil demand will be structurally lower. That demand destruction is permanent. It doesn't come back when prices fall. It was never there to begin with. The IRS raised the mileage rate because the Strait of Hormuz closed. In doing so, it published the crossover price at which autonomous electric transportation beats driving yourself. Waymo hits that number by 2030. Taxi cab commissions are mandating the electrifiation of the highest-mileage vehicles in the fleet right now. And the generation that would have been oil's next loyal customers has already opted out. The transition from personal car ownership has a price signal. I was sitting with a guest whose stories branch. They double back, open new doors before closing old ones. In a therapy room, that isn't a problem — that's the material. It's their hour. Where a person's mind travels is the information. You follow. You don't redirect. You certainly don't stop someone mid-story and ask them to begin again. So I followed. For the entire conversation. And somewhere in there it struck me that I had a tool I've never had in a clinical room. I can edit! I could have said: hold on, let's take that again from the top, so I can get the whole story. I could have asked the same question twice. I could have paused, reset, and gone back for the version that would actually land for someone who wasn't there with us. It didn't occur to me until afterward. I was running on an instinct that says: never interrupt the story. But an interview isn't therapy. In therapy, the person across from me is the only audience that matters. In an interview, there's someone else — a listener who wasn't in the room, who needs the story to arrive whole. That's a different craft. Same listening. Different demand — a willingness to intervene in the telling. I'm getting more comfortable with it. Andrew Goodale liked thisAndrew Goodale liked thisOn July 6th, India was 50% clean energy powered for 15 minutes. It's a small achievement, and monsoon rains did a lot of the work: rainfall cut cooling demand and boosted hydro output at the same time. But small achievements are how every big trend starts. I started building one of their first 5MW solar projects in 2010 when their largest solar project was just 900kW. For years, India's clean energy story looked like China's, just a bit faster because they could ride the cost curve that made solar and now batteries relentlessly cheaper. Then came Hormuz. The IEA called it the largest supply disruption in the history of the oil market. Traffic through the strait collapsed from over 130 daily ship transits to fewer than 10. India is one of the largest oil importers in the world — it imports 88% of its crude oil, and roughly half of that normally moves through Hormuz. Over 60% of household LPG is imported, with 90% of it transiting the same route. The Indian crude basket nearly doubled, from $69 a barrel in February to $126 in March, spiking as high as $157. EV registrations jumped 50% YoY in March, then more than doubled by June, hitting a record 12% EV penetration across all vehicle sales. Tata Motors’ EV chief said recent West Asia developments are pushing buyers toward electric vehicles as fuel prices stay elevated. Rooftop solar has more than doubled as well. It's also destroyed the case for LNG as a "bridge fuel." LNG already made little economic sense against coal, and increasingly against solar plus batteries, in the power sector. Hormuz reminded everyone how fragile that supply chain really was, and how much they'd been forcing the numbers to work. Nuclear is getting pulled into the same logic. India's target of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 predates Hormuz, but a supply shock like this is exactly the argument that turns a slow-moving target into a funded priority. Nuclear's whole value proposition is firm, import-independent baseload, which is precisely what a Hormuz-style shock exposes as missing. And unlike the last time India built out solar, it is also focused on domestic module manufacturing capacity which has just high 100GWs, more than enough to supply 100% of India's annual installations. Battery storage deployment surged nearly tenfold quarter-on-quarter in early 2026, making it a real solution to localized grid problems. China's transition was pulled by industrial policy and manufacturing scale. India is showing what it looks like when cost curves and energy security both pull in the same direction at once. Countries around the world are deploying at scale and demanding a transfer of technology to manufacture locally as well. China's transition was driven by an economic crisis and manufacturing overcapacity. India's transition is driven by its memory of exactly how fast $69 became $157, and how little control the country had over reversing it. They are now focused on dramatically reducing their energy imports.

Andrew Goodale liked thisNew Jersey just signed the Data Center Fair Share Act (S731/A796). Here's how it compells data centers to install batteries for folks in the local community. The mechanics: → Applies to data centers at 50MW+ demand, with facilities under common ownership or on contiguous sites aggregated so operators can't dodge the threshold by splitting projects. → Utilities must file a dedicated BPU tariff for these customers, built to shield residential ratepayers from costs driven by data center demand. → New large-load customers must guarantee they'll pay for at least 85% of requested service for 10 years, plus post financial security against stranded costs if a project scales back or shuts down early. → During grid emergencies, large data centers get curtailed before residential customers — similiar to what Texas did in SB6. → Data centers must make demand-response and flexibility commitments and report performance to the BPU annually. Those that bring their own clean generation or storage get priority interconnection. Faster grid access in exchange for real capacity, not just paperwork. How does this turn into a capacity contract for locally deployed batteries? → The flexibility commitment is baked into the tariff itself. No signature, no interconnection. → The physics are the big unlock. If you can "turn down" residential load during a crisis through batteries you install in their garage you can free up capacity for your large load. For a hyperscaler racing to go live, providing batteries to local residences and businesses would increase that capital costs by less than 1%. Committing to "free stuff" for their neighbors is worth more than the cost of compliance. Regulatory and reputational insurance. Being the visible "good actor" on flexibility buys goodwill for the next fight over water use, tax treatment, or expansion permits. The take-or-pay guarantee and stranded-cost deposits are the stick. Constructive flexibility participation is how an operator negotiates softer terms elsewhere in its tariff. The statute sets the mandate but leaves the actual enforcement teeth to a BPU rulemaking process over the next year. The Utility wants this to be less an operational obligation and instead a soft reporting requirement. NJ is the first state to structure it this way. Oregon, Florida, and Oklahoma have passed related but narrower cost-allocation bills. Now we have to help New Jersey get the rulemaking right. Today, Governor Sherrill signed a broader energy affordability package to cut unnecessary utility costs, strengthen oversight of grid investments, and protect families from rising energy bills. At the center of it is the breakthrough Data Center Fair Share Act. This law advances a core Homegrown Energy idea: large data centers should pay their own way and help fund customer-sited energy resources that lower costs and strengthen the grid for everyone. It feels especially fitting that Governor Sherrill signed the package at a constituent’s home. That setting captures the larger point: energy policy should deliver for families directly. Households can and should be understood and valued as energy infrastructure, and putting them at the center is how we build a cleaner, more affordable, more resilient grid. A major win for New Jersey, and a model other states should follow.
