Amanda Winters Cheung shared thisWe talk about "fighting fires" and "navigating ambiguity" in business. Now imagine putting that into practice against the backdrop of real fire and smoke, injured people trapped in a building screaming for help, and no one coming to save you. Could you rise above the chaos? This weekend, I served as Incident Commander in a disaster drill, leading a team of 23 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers. After eight weeks of hands-on learning, we put our training into practice rescuing 25 "survivors" from a smoke-filled, five-story building. And because this is LinkedIn, here are five things this experience taught me about leadership: 1. Pause before acting. A quick size-up of the situation leads to informed decisions and a more effective response. 2. Keep priorities simple and clear. In this case: doing the most good for the most people. 3. Pick strong leads. Communicators who are strategic thinkers and not afraid to challenge your plan with their own knowledge will make the team stronger. Be open to their influence. 4. Trust your team. Micromanaging kills efficiency. Your job is to keep the big picture in view; identifying gaps, anticipating needs, and empowering everyone to do their best. 5. Over-communicate. Conditions change fast. Check in with your leads often and be prepared to reallocate resources as needed. Leadership under pressure isn't about control. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of shaping communications that connect our employees to our strategy and our executive leadership, earning a seat at the table to drive change initiatives that impact the entire organization. In this new role, I’ll continue leading executive and internal communications — providing support and guidance to our CEO, C-Suite and Board during critical moments. I will also champion Quest’s culture and inclusion efforts through our Equality & Inclusion Council and take on a bigger role in employee engagement efforts. I’m grateful for the trust our leadership team has placed in me (especially LuAnn Johnson, Tim Page, Heath Thompson and John Hernandez) and proud to support the employees and culture that make Quest what it is. Amanda Winters Cheung shared thisIs anyone even reading this? 🤔 Is anyone listening? 👂 Do these words matter? 💬 Does my work matter? 🤷♂️ I've asked myself these questions countless times over the course of my 15+ year career in communications. First as a journalist, then as a public relations manager, and most recently as an internal communications leader. Last week, the answer I heard at Quest Software's sales kickoff in Boston was a resounding YES. 🙌 Months ago, I distilled thousands of words about business strategy into a two-word phrase: Quest Ahead. The goal was to create something simple yet sticky that could serve as an internal rallying cry and a foundation for what was to come as the company began a new chapter. With the support of executive leadership, I launched Quest Ahead and held my breath to see if it would catch on. 🤞 Boy, did it ever. 🎉 In Boston, Quest Ahead was the banner under which leadership talked about 2025 and beyond. It was the theme of what is possible when we put customers at the center of everything we do and give ourselves permission to adapt and grow through change. And to me, it was a reminder that communications matters — as does working for leaders who demonstrate they understand its strategic value. 💡 Bravo to the team for an incredible event and thank you to everyone supporting Quest Ahead. Here’s what that looks like in practice: We’re at $450K for the month. $500K is right there. Instead of grinding, I ask one question — what’s the single move that closes this gap without burning anyone out? Sometimes it’s one email to our list. Sometimes it’s a 48-hour offer. Sometimes it’s a single Instagram post. Small. Strategic. Disproportionate results. I call this the Lever Theory. And I’ve used it for revenue targets, savings milestones, debt payoff goals — anything with a finish line and a gap to close. Most entrepreneurs think scaling means working harder. It doesn’t. It means getting better at finding the lever. The goal doesn’t change. The approach does. It requires no data centers or electricity, as it's powered by sustainable fuels such as sunlight, glucose, fatty acids, and protein. You never even need to plug it in! While the capex to build it isn't cheap, it rarely requires venture capital or an IPO to procure. And yes, I'm talking about the human brain.

In addition to our highly-engaged, high-trust social audience, I also built a 500K subscriber email list (that has a 50% open rate and grows by 5-10K every week.) Why would I bother with building an email list when I have millions of followers? Because if Instagram deletes my account tomorrow, I'd be screwed. (A real thing that happened.) Because if TikTok changes their algorithm and my posts stop performing, I'd be screwed. (Another real thing that happened.) Because if I build my house on land I don't own, I don't own a business -- I just make Meta money.
