Amanda Steigerwalt-Maxhimer reposted thisIs Graphic Design Hiring Becoming a Joke? The job market for designers has become a circus, and we’re the unwilling performers. Recruiters want one person to juggle UX/UI, graphic design, motion graphics, 3D elements, and video editing, each a specialized skill that takes years to master. When they post these absurd job descriptions, do they even know what they’re talking about? Or are they just throwing buzzwords together and hoping for a miracle? And then comes the grand finale, the infamous "assignment." What was once a fair way to gauge skills has now become an exploitative free-for-all. I was once invited to an “interview” only to find myself in a group call with 87 other candidates, all given the same task and told to finish it in under 15 minutes. I won’t name the brand, but I was truly disappointed to see that this is the hiring process of such a well-established company. Creativity is not a vending machine, you don’t just press a button and get instant results. The worst part? Silence. No feedback, no rejection, just a black hole where our effort disappears. After multiple follow-ups, all you get is ghosted. It’s not hiring; it’s free labor dressed up as an opportunity. If companies expect designers to dedicate their time and talent, the least they can do is respect the profession. Creativity isn’t cheap, and it’s about time recruiters stopped treating it like a disposable commodity. We’re designers, not doormats. So, to every designer out there, how many of us have faced this? If your pay hasn’t changed since 2020, inflation has already taken $24,000 off the table. It’s not just about earning more, it’s about not falling behind. Maybe it’s time to ask for that raise. It’s becoming common for companies to expect one person to be a designer, video editor, photographer, animator, content creator, and marketer all in one. We also partner with local organizations willing to donate time and transportation methods to deliver these home grown donations to people who would otherwise go without. Planting an extra row of carrots, replacing bushes with decretive and edible plants like cabbage and kale, or splitting your back yard apple harvest can ensure that your own hungry neighbor has your support.
