Through the chaos, I landed dream clients, built a thriving business, AND hired an amazing team. Here are 10 Things I Learnt the Hard Way: 👇 1. Hard Work Isn't Good Enough - You can be brilliant and invisible at the same time. - If no one knows about your work, it doesn’t matter. - Be visible. Speak up. Silence is a career killer. 2. Thick Skin Is Non-Negotiable - You will get rejected. Repeatedly. - Sometimes it stings so bad you question your worth. - Don’t. Rejection isn’t a reflection of your value—it’s proof you’re in the game. 3. When People Are Rude, It's On Them - Their bitterness isn’t your burden. - Don’t let their poison seep into your self-worth. - It’s not yours to carry. LET THEM! 4. Some People Are Just Nasty - There will be clients who drain your soul. Fire them. FAST. - I had a client who gave me heart palpitations. - Haven’t worked with her in 5 years. Best. Decision. Ever. 5. Firing Clients Is Self-Care - Money isn’t worth your mental health. - If working with someone feels like emotional quicksand, walk away. - No amount of zeros on a paycheck will save you. 6. Your Biggest Cheerleaders Are Gold - Some clients will champion you like crazy! - Double down on them. - They’re the foundation of your growth, sanity, and success. 7. It Gets Lonely at the Top - Success can feel like standing on a mountaintop alone. - Be intentional about your friendships. - Your career won’t hug you when life punches you in the face. People will. 8. You’re Only as Successful as the People You Work With - Your network isn’t just your net worth—it’s your safety net. - Surround yourself with people who challenge, - inspire, and hold you accountable. 9. Not Everyone Deserves a Third Chance - Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. - Fool me three times? - That’s just self-sabotage. Protect your peace. 10. Learning Never Ends - Complacency is the slowest form of failure. - Growth isn’t a milestone—it’s a mindset. - Because if you’re not learning, you’re losing. Amanda Cunningham liked thisAmanda Cunningham liked thisThe panel got denied again. Sound familiar? The lab industry’s standard response is “the payers just hate me”. That is not really what is going on with denials.... Here's the pattern I keep seeing: A lab runs a 30-target respiratory panel. Clinically, it's thorough. Operationally, it's efficient. But the payor sees a laundry list of codes and flags it as overutilization. The denial isn't about whether the test was accurate. It's about whether the test was necessary for that patient, that presentation, that ICD-10. Carriers are denying claims, and that is not going to change. They are not denying claims because they hate infectious disease testing. They are denying because many of the tests they are sent are just not clinically relevant. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗵: • Syndromic design that matches clinical presentation, not maximum target count. • Panels built around provider taxonomy. Urgent care doesn't need the same targets as OBGYN. • ICD-10 to CPT crosswalks embedded in the ordering logic. Not reviewed after the fact. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Are you designing panels to answer every possible question? Or to answer the right question for this patient? When we redesigned our OBGYN menu around clinical utility, reimbursement improved. Not because we billed more. Because we billed what was defensible. The payor is not necessarily the enemy, poor panel design is.

Amanda Cunningham liked thisAmanda Cunningham liked thisLeptospirosis Is Now a Core Vaccine — But Here’s the Part No One Is Talking About Yet 🦠 AAHA officially updated its canine vaccination guidelines in 2024 to reclassify the leptospirosis vaccine as core for all dogs, with the update shared publicly in January 2025. AAHA reports a substantial increase in cases across both urban and rural environments, and ACVIM’s 2024 consensus recommends annual vaccination for all dogs starting at 12 weeks, regardless of breed, lifestyle, or perceived risk. So yes — vaccination is now essential. But here’s what deserves just as much attention: Vaccination protects the individual. Screening protects the entire community. And leptospirosis is exactly the kind of disease where we need both. 🔍 1. Lepto often presents with vague, nonspecific signs Early cases can look like “nothing” — yet those dogs may still shed Leptospira into the environment before anyone realizes something is wrong. 🌎 2. A major One Health concern Leptospirosis is zoonotic and globally significant, with over one million human cases annually. Protecting pets protects people. 🌧️ 3. Exposure risk now spans every environment Urban wildlife, climate changes, and environmental persistence mean even “indoor dogs” are no longer insulated from risk. 💧 4. Environmental shedding drives spread Leptospira can survive in soil and water for weeks to months. Detecting cases early helps break the shedding cycle. 🧪 5. The tools to screen effectively are already here Rapid, point‑of‑care options like the SNAP Lepto Test — paired with PCR/serology at the reference lab — help teams: • Catch early or vague presentations • Confirm infection before shedding continues • Protect high‑traffic environments • Strengthen vaccine‑compliance conversations Screening isn’t an “extra.” With Lepto now core, it’s a critical companion to prevention. 🧭 The Future of Lepto Prevention Isn’t “Vaccine OR Screening.” It’s Both. Rising prevalence, zoonotic impact, improved vaccine safety, and broader exposure risks all point in the same direction: vaccination alone isn’t enough. Vaccination reduces susceptibility. Screening reduces spread. Together, they deliver the strongest protection we can offer. As I stand alongside Dr Michael Bailey the current president-elect of the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) I am reminded of the profound impact he has had on my journey in veterinary medicine. The story begins at Coll. Vet. Med. NAH Tuskegee University where Dr. Bailey served as my radiology professor. Spirited and energetic, his passion for veterinary radiology was infectious, igniting a spark within me. The spark was so bright that I started to pursue a radiology residency. About 2 years out of vet school, I had an epiphany: radiology didn’t completely fill my cup. :-) Radiology is deeply intellectually fulfilling, but there is a magic about the hands-on aspect of surgery that is undeniable. I approached surgery with the same vigor that I had learned from Dr. Bailey during radiology class. Many articles have been written in celebration of Dr. Bailey. But on Black History Month, we celebrate not only the achievements of Dr. Bailey but also the milestones he represents within our profession. As the first-ever Black president-elect of the AVMA (@avmavets), he is both a testament to the progress we’ve made and a symbol of hope for future generations of veterinarians. Our story is a reminder that our paths may shift, but with passion, purpose and great mentorship we can continue to uplift our communities and inspire change. Thanks Dr. Bailey. Her advanced training program for underrepresented veterinarians brought me to Michigan State in 2000, kept me here in 2001, and provided a support network that is still in place today.
