Certainly not a plane crash. Creating equitable outcomes and experiences for people is not the reason for any of the problems that you blame it for. Poor leadership will always paint the picture that everyone was to blame except for them- this is a tale as old as time. DEI serves everyone from people with veterans, to parents, to immigrants. This work aims to create equitable outcomes for everyone but your BS facebook posts told you that DEI was synonymous with Black people. So even if you hate people like me- I do this work for you. We do this work for you, even the people who hate us. So instead of pointing fingers at the people who want a better infrastructure, a better world and a better future- point at history and point at leaders who have ignored humanity for direct deposits, point at the policies that traded your humanity for their chosen outcomes. Instead of pointing to topics you don't understand simply because you only chose to read about them on facebook- start getting critical of your leaders, your government and the policies you vote for.

Katie began her career as a construction laborer and apprentice carpenter, eventually finding her way into the energy efficiency industry through the MassSave program. What started as an unexpected introduction to building science quickly became a passion. Since then, she has built a diverse career encompassing energy auditing, auditor and sales training, HVAC systems and instruction, home inspection, and most recently, quality assurance. Katie is currently based in New Jersey, and she will play a vital role in connecting weatherization contractors and the green workforce to the students of your programs. I'd always been the unofficial tech support for everyone around me, but chose chemistry as the "safe" path. After years in QC, I had a realization: I was most engaged when troubleshooting problems and helping others understand systems - which is what I want to bring to IT. Since then, I've been working through Google's IT Support and CompTIA A+ certificates. Something cool I came across recently while learning about TCP/UDP protocols is floating point arithmetic limitation - suddenly I understood why we got those mysterious rounding quirks in analytical software. I'm currently driving school bus to support this transition - the flexible schedule gives me time to study, and honestly, it's been a good reminder that every job teaches you something. Never thought I'd be driving bus while studying TCP protocols, but here we are. Life's weird like that.

My husband reminded me of that this week. He admitted that he was a little embarrassed I had shared he was out of work. But I reminded him: Sometimes, when you say it out loud, people show up for you. There’s that old Mister Rogers quote: “Look for the helpers.” And we have. And we have found them. Friends sharing job postings. Former coworkers sending referrals. Connections offering to make intros without us even asking. Being laid off is hard. It’s humbling. But the silence around it? That can feel even heavier. So if your partner, your best friend, your colleague—or even, you—have been laid off: Don’t be afraid to talk about it. There are more helpers than you think. And to the helpers: You make all the difference. Thank you. #layoff #opentowork #jobsearch
