Most failures happen in layers 4 and 5, not in the models. Think of Agentic AI in 5 layers: 𝟭/ 𝗔𝗜 & 𝗠𝗟 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) Turning data into decisions. This is classical learning. Supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. 𝟮/ 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲) Neural networks and transformers. This is where the machinery learns patterns at scale. 𝟯/ 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗔𝗜 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲) LLMs and multimodal generation. LLMs generate content. RAG pulls context. Multimodal models handle text, image, audio and video. The output layer. 𝟰/ 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) Where AI becomes operational. • Planning (ReAct, Chain-of-Thought, Tree-of-Thought) • Tool use and orchestration • Context management (state + history) • Human-in-the-loop oversight 𝟱/ 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺) Autonomy at scale. It is the most underestimated layer. It includes: • Governance, safety, guardrails • Observability and tracing (Why did it do that?) • Memory governance and retention policies • Rollback and failure recovery • Cost and resource management • Multi-agent coordination Clever algorithms don't guarantee reliability. Architecture does. Without audit trails, debugging capabilities, reversal mechanisms, and clear boundaries, you haven't built autonomy. You've created an unpredictable script that might or might not work. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: "Which technology should I pick?"
