it wasn't too many years ago that the NEM first reached 50% renewable in a 5 minute period. We've now had an entire week that was 50% renewable, and a 5 minute period that reached 78% Interestingly, OpenElectricity indicates that over the last year, weekly renewable penetration has ranged between 32% and 52%, averaging 42%. That's probably a lot less variability than many imagine!

Let’s talk about the 𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵. Your ETAP load flow converged. But your plant would have tripped. That’s not a software bug. That’s a modeling blind spot. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗣 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝘀? By default, ETAP treats the slack bus as an infinite generator: • Can supply any amount of real power (P) • Can supply any amount of reactive power (Q) • No thermal limits • No mechanical limits • No fuel constraints • No ramp-rate limits In short: It absorbs all mismatches silently. This is mathematically convenient. And physically dangerous. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆? In real systems, the slack bus is not infinite — especially in: • Industrial captive power plants (gas / diesel / biomass) • Small hydro stations • Solar + battery hybrid plants • Islanded or weak microgrids In these systems, generators operate close to limits. Reality doesn’t forgive mismatches. It trips. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? While ETAP proudly shows “Converged”, the real system responds with: • Generator overload • Under-frequency events • AVR hitting excitation limits • Protective trips • Partial or total blackout The study converged. The plant didn’t. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗣 (𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹)? For every generator, explicitly enable: • Pmax / Pmin • Qmax / Qmin Stop letting the slack bus behave like a superhero. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? Now the slack bus: • Fails instead of hiding the problem • Refuses to absorb impossible mismatches Your study starts revealing the truth: • Voltage collapse • Non-convergence • Unmet load • Generator limit violations And that’s exactly what you want. The key insight most engineers miss 𝙉𝙤𝙣-𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙪𝙧𝙚. 𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. It tells you: “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥.” If your load flow always converges, you’re probably under-modeling your system. Slack bus ≠ infinite generator. Model limits. Let the system fail on screen so it doesn’t fail in the field. PS: I share practical ETAP insights they don’t teach in manuals. Follow for real-world power system thinking—not textbook assumptions.
