People often talk about regrets in terms of things they did not do, rather than regretting things they did. To that end, my two biggest regrets are: Not letting the kids name our dog Sir Jumps-a-Lot. Not finding my way to Choate sooner. I'm back home now.

Maybe the students booing AI have learned exactly what they’ve been taught. For years now, nearly every public argument for AI has revolved around productivity. Efficiency. Optimization. Scale. “Ten employees can now do the work of a hundred.” “Automate workflows.” “Increase output.” “Reduce labor costs.” Even the utopian language somehow sounds managerial. Imagine being twenty-two years old and hearing that over and over again. And your professors warn you that AI will destroy critical thinking. Journalists publish alarmed essays about the death of writing. Tech executives promise “productivity gains,” which is corporate language for doing more with fewer people until eventually fewer people means you. So the students learn that AI is a weapon in an economic struggle. Use it or fall behind. But also, use it secretly. Use it guiltily. Use it defensively. Use it because professors, journalists and everybody else is using it. But never trust it. Never approach it with innocence or wonder because every authority figure in your life has framed it either as cheating or as a mechanism for replacing workers. So the students boo. But what exactly are they booing? Not really the technology itself. Many of them have already experienced moments with these systems that would have seemed miraculous ten years ago. A machine patiently explaining calculus at two in the morning. Helping untangle a confusing paragraph. Translating obscure ideas into understandable language. Acting, however imperfectly, like an infinitely available tutor. Maybe they are booing the fact that AI entered their lives as an immoral weapon you have no choice but to use or defend against. Imagine if the telescope were introduced as a way to improve quarterly navigation profits. Every revolutionary tool in history can be flattened into utility if the culture lacks imagination. Somewhere along the way, young people stopped being taught that knowledge could be joyous and became convinced that knowledge was primarily strategic. Education transformed from exploration into positioning. Curiosity became secondary to employability. So when AI arrives, they do not encounter it as explorers standing before a new continent. There is something sad about this. AI is not merely a machine for accelerating output. It may be the greatest instrument for intellectual play ever invented. A tool for wandering through ideas, trying things badly, asking foolish questions without embarrassment, following strange curiosities for hours, learning subjects you once thought were beyond your reach. Maybe someday after the panic settles and the big companies lose control of the story, a generation will finally approach these tools the way people once approached microscopes or chemistry sets or libraries. Not asking first how to survive them, but what marvelous things might happen if you simply start playing.
