I’m also deeply grateful for the last 2 years with Every Kid Sports. EKS gave me the opportunity to be part of meaningful work alongside people who care deeply about helping kids access the life-changing power of sports. I’m thankful for the relationships, lessons, and experiences that will stay with me as I move into this next chapter. Learn more about their mission - it’s incredibly important. Sports have shaped so much of my life — not just through games, but through stories, traditions, memories, and the people they bring together. The opportunity to help preserve and celebrate the history of basketball while building support for its future is both humbling and energizing. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I’m looking forward to this new opportunity and excited for what’s ahead. 🏀

In her latest piece, Every Kid Sports Executive Director, eleana fanaika makes a direct and uncomfortable argument: the barriers keeping kids out of sports — the fees, the time demands, the early specialization pressure — aren't system failures. They're system features. The model was built to maximize revenue. Families pay the price. And nonprofits like ours exist to clean up the mess. "Multi-sport participation does not generate year-round registration fees, private coaching revenue, or tournament income." That one line says everything. Eleana calls for real structural change: cost transparency, developmental honesty, accessible recreational pathways, and family-centered design. Not charity as a substitute for equity. The most meaningful partnerships we've seen start with alignment. Adam Barbato, MBA/MSA, BSS posted thisI've been thinking a lot about what sports actually gives us. Not the trophies. Not the scholarships. Not even the competition. It's something harder to explain. It might be the first time you feel like you belong somewhere outside your family; it's learning how to lose...and still show up the next day; and it's hearing your name called, and feeling like it matters. For a lot of us, sports were never just a game. They were a place where confidence started. And I wonder how many kids never get that moment. Not because they didn't want it. But because something got in the way. A fee. A ride. A missed opportunity. We talk a lot about what sports can become at the highest levels. But the part that sticks with most of us... happened long before any of that. Just a kid. A team. And the feeling of being part of something. That's the part worth protecting.

Somewhere along the way, we flipped the order: -It used to be play → explore → grow -Now it’s commit → perform → maybe stay And if you don't keep up? You're out. It evolved around competition. But the opportunity in front of us is different: ✔️ Trusted messengers (pediatricians) ✔️ Proven barrier (cost) ✔️ Clear outcome (health, confidence, belonging) We don't need to convince people that play matters. We need to build the system that makes it accessible and guided. This is where things get interesting. Interested in what thoughts you might have.Adam Barbato, MBA/MSA, BSS shared thisWhere are the child development experts in youth sports? Not coaches. Not governing bodies. Pediatricians. Child psychologists. Development researchers. The clinicians who have spent careers understanding how kids grow physically, emotionally, and socially. A physician takes an oath to serve the whole child. They already prescribe for mental health, nutrition, and development. They have the trusted relationship. The consistent touchpoint. No conflict of interest. What if they could also prescribe play? Imagine an Rx that puts real money directly into a family's hands so they can say yes to their kid. Not just soccer. Not just football. Rock climbing. Archery. Fencing. Martial arts. Parkour. Tumbling. Stepping. Double-dutch. Youth sports is not a sport. It's a child finding the thing that makes them feel capable and joyful. And then, every visit after that, the doctor keeps asking. How are your coaches? Do you feel safe? Do you know the signs of a concussion? What do you do if you get injured? Are you having fun, or thinking about quitting? Right now, kids and parents are floating on an island. The only place to ask feels like the system itself, with something to gain from the answer. What if their pediatrician was that resource instead? Activity data collected alongside height, weight, and vitals. Check-in questions built into every visit. A longitudinal picture of a child's development in sport, year after year. That data matters. It tells us what access to sport actually does for a child's physical health, confidence, and emotional wellbeing. And it builds the case for why this investment is worth making. At Every Kid Sports, we know how to get money into families' hands so kids can play. The architecture for Rx to Play is worth building. But it takes donors who see what's possible, clinicians ready to champion a new role, and researchers willing to measure what sport does for a child's whole life. This isn't built yet. That's why I'm talking about it. But here's what I can't stop thinking about: We've spend years talking about the problem... and almost no time redesigning the system. Cost is real. No question. Bust cost is also the output of something bigger... how youth sports are build, funded, and sustained If we only focus on "making it cheaper," we're not actually fixing what's broken. We're just patching it. So what would it look like to actually redesign youth sports, not just make it more affordable? Curious how others are thinking about this.

One of many messages I received after publishing "Built to Exclude" last week. "I felt like you were talking to me directly." "I teared up." "You brought me right back to my older kids' experiences." I wrote that article because I couldn't stop thinking about it. I didn't know if anyone else was. Turns out, parents everywhere are carrying the same weight and had no idea they weren't alone in it. That's exactly why access for everyone benefits everyone. Not just the kids who can afford it. It was their fourth one in three years, and it was the same story each time: > great in the interview > strong first month > fading by month three > gone by month 12 He'd decided it was the market or the talent pool or Gen Z....literally anything but the building they all walked into. I asked him one question: "What does your onboarding actually look like?" Long pause....and then something like "We sit them down with the CRM and kind of... let them find their feet." So, it wasn't bad luck, it was a system producing exactly what it's designed to produce. When you're scaling, you're not hiring five fundraisers with all of their transferable skills to just hit the ground running. You're responsible for transferring those skills and until you do, you've hired five flight risks - and every one of them costs 90% to 200% of their salary to replace once you count the search, the ramp, and the donor relationships that walk out the door with them. "Let them find their feet" isn't a neutral choice. It's the most expensive line item you're not tracking — because what those first 90 days feel like is the single biggest predictor of whether they stay, and we go silent right when it matters most. What's your real onboarding plan? And I mean the written one :), not the one that lives in your best manager's head.

Adam Barbato, MBA/MSA, BSS liked thisAdam Barbato, MBA/MSA, BSS liked thisIf I just became a nonprofit executive director and never fundraised before, this is where I would start: 1) Schedule in-person visits with the top 10 donors who are most passionate about your mission. Ask them what prompted them to start giving, how they have felt their giving has been stewarded, and how the org can earn the right to ask for their support again in the future. 2) Get a concrete plan for your personal fundraising efforts. It is definitely worthwhile to define a portfolio of 50-100 donors and steward those relationships the best you possibly can. 3) Invest in your fundraising expertise! It could be hiring a coach, taking an online course, going through a certificate program at a university, or anything that will sharpen your ability to serve donors well. I graduated in ‘17 and ‘22. My brothers in ‘19 and ‘22. Tonight we grabbed dinner together on campus. We lit a candle together at the Grotto. These are the moments I cherish. “For those who know Notre Dame, no explanation is necessary. For those who don’t, no explanation will suffice.” Tonight was special. We never know when it could be the last. But Notre Dame never leaves you. It only gets better with time. And until we meet again… Love thee. And as always Go Irish! ☘️

Before taking the job she did her homework — she'd researched the charity’s: ➟ Impact ➟ Financial history ➟ Reputation among donors She was also told at the interview there was: ↳ High turnover (in fundraising) ↳ Low staff morale ↳ A financial deficit And, according to the senior leadership team: "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳." She was ready for challenges. What she wasn’t ready for was the reality. Her predecessor had been excellent. The REAL problems weren’t the visible symptoms above the surface — but the culture beneath it: ➟ Micromanagement ➟ Favouritism ➟ Incompetent leadership ➟ Blame culture ➟ Lack of trust ➟ Overwork and burnout ➟ Unrealistic expectations ➟ Feeling undervalued ➟ Gossip and office politics ➟ Poor communication In other words: the invisible stuff we all feel. And without trust, respect, and an environment where people want to stay — fundraising success is impossible. This charity never had a “fundraising problem.” It had a culture problem. She gave it her best shot, but she couldn’t fix the root causes alone. Fortunately, a new CEO arrived six months later. Slowly, the culture began to shift. And with it, staff turnover and financial results. 📌 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲.
