I’ve recently seen an increase in job posts that look more like a “wish list” rather than a strategic hire for an organization. So many businesses still expect a single social media professional to fulfill multiple roles…This shouldn’t be the case. Is it because they don’t understand? Do they not know what they need? I’m not sure. 👉 But a single social media person can not be a: - Strategist - Content Writer - Graphic Designer / Videographer - Community Manager - Paid Advertising Specialist - Social Monitoring & Listening Expert - Customer Service Representative - Data Analyst - Campaign Manager - Influencer & Partner Marketing Coordinator… and so on. PLUS also be expected to be proficient across ALL social platforms. 🤯 It's crazy that this is even expected! Now don’t get me wrong - I love seeing the role of social media evolving within organizations. ❗ But just a quick reminder to my marketing leaders out there: Before posting your next social media role, narrowing down your job description is essential if you want to find the right talent. Here are a few things to keep in mind.. consider how this role will: 1️⃣ Align with our overarching marketing strategy and objectives. 2️⃣ Contribute to the organization's growth. 3️⃣ Collaborate with internal teams. 4️⃣ Enhance your presence on platforms *relevant* to your business. Social media roles need to be viewed through the lens of impact - not merely checking boxes. Agree or disagree? What am I missing?

Across three stations, I survived five ownership changes, transitioned from manual switching to automation, and worked with about 20 different news directors. My favorite one was.....🤔 I don’t miss the long hours or the chaos that came with the job… but I do miss the people. I’m so grateful to everyone I worked with over the years. You challenged me, supported me, and made me laugh when I needed it most. I learned a lot about the job, about life, and about myself. And let’s be honest....I was right most of the time. 😉 All jokes aside, I’m a better person because of the people I shared those years with. So if we ever worked together..... Thank you, Sergei Klimov and Alma Giedraitienė for extending me the invitation, and thank you for all your dedication in making this event happen. It's incredibly apparent that global perspectives and contributions are what will continue to fuel the games industry. The Games Law Summit On Tour is a rare gem that unites professionals from around the world in an engaging & unprejudiced environment. It sparks enriching conversations and shares knowledge for the betterment of both the industry and the professionals within it. It was certainly eye-opening watching demonstrators take to the streets of Rome just days after we walked them for the summit. Reinstating the need to think collectively and as a community, regardless of background and opinion. Grateful for all my colleagues I call my friends and my team at MGL LLP, Ryan Morrison, Wileen Leu and Leah Stevenson whom I don't get to see as often as I'd like in person! I truly can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this Massachusetts girl walked through the doors at My NBC5. What a journey it’s been so far! Truthfully, I always thought I'd make it back home to the Boston area but life had other plans. I'm happily married to a Vermonter and have fallen in love with the people and adorable little towns in this neck of the woods. Over the course of the past decade, I've worked in every corner of our market, covering a wide range of stories (including a crazy prison break...anyone remember that?) I'm so grateful for all of the time spent in each chapter of my career here -- from MMJ to weekend anchor to primary evening anchor. Grateful to management for seeing my potential and encouraging me along the way. Here's to many more years covering the news of the day in Vermont, New York & New Hampshire!

Now, don't get me wrong. Social media managers are incredibly versatile professionals. They’re strategists, storytellers, content creators, community builders, and trendspotters all rolled into one. But here’s the thing; social media is only one piece of the marketing puzzle. A complete marketing strategy involves specialists like: 1️⃣ Content writers for blogs and email marketing. 2️⃣ Graphic designers for polished visuals. 3️⃣ Paid ad specialists for campaigns. 4️⃣ SEO experts to drive organic growth. 5️⃣ PR teams to manage reputation. 6️⃣ Analysts to track the big-picture metrics. Yet, more and more companies today are advertising for "Social Media Managers" with job descriptions that span 10 roles in one. It’s not just unrealistic but also unsustainable. Imagine asking a chef to cook, wait tables, manage the restaurant, and clean up at the end of the night. Sure, they might pull it off for a while, but at what cost? Getting Burntout!😪😪 The same applies here. When companies overburden their social media managers, they’re not setting them or the brand up for success. Let’s stop treating social media managers like the Swiss Army knives of marketing and start respecting their role for what it truly is: an essential, specialized part of the larger marketing ecosystem. If you’re a social media manager feeling overwhelmed, know that it is okay to speak up. Advocate for clarity in your role. A great team is built on collaboration, not one person carrying the weight of everything. And if you’re hiring, remember investing in a complete marketing team isn’t just fair, it’s the key to creating campaigns that thrive. Let’s shift the narrative. Today, I posted a job on LinkedIn and included clear application instructions: "Send your resume and cover letter to shelly@rootedrock.com with the subject line: Paid Media Specialist Position. In your email, explain your favorite aspect of working in paid media and which one of Rooted Rock’s core values resonates with you most. Responses through LinkedIn will be moved to a secondary candidate pool." Result: Within just 3 hours, LinkedIn paused my free job posting because I hit my limit of 50 applicants. Unfortunately, 50 people were overlooked simply because they didn’t follow basic instructions. During that time, I received 4 emails, but only 1 followed the instructions properly, which means just one applicant is being considered for an interview. As a business owner, my responsibility is to deliver top-quality work to our clients who trust us with their marketing dollars. If you can’t follow instructions when applying for a job, how can I trust you to execute quality work for my clients? #JobSearch #AttentionToDetail #Hiring #PaidMedia
