Leading up to the AI Infra Summit in September, TechArena.ai is spending time with companies up and down the AI stack, getting smart on what AI infrastructure requires. This week, we sat down with Brandon Smith, vice president of global sales and product at ZincFive, Inc., and he got us thinking about power. AI is changing how electricity moves through the data center. The load no longer holds steady the way a traditional workload does, and that puts new pressure on the equipment built to protect it. Here's the problem Brandon lays out: An AI workload can swing from idle to full draw and back in milliseconds, then do it again thousands of times an hour. The data center industry spent decades building UPS systems for one event, the loss of grid power. Ask those same systems to soak up constant, high-speed step loads and they can buckle. ZincFive's answer runs on nickel-zinc. The chemistry takes the punishment of AI cycling and stays safe enough to site the system closer to critical equipment. That gives the UPS a second job. It absorbs the spikes and releases energy as the workload calls for it, shaping load in real time before it travels through the facility and out to the grid.
