The most effective water safety measures often begin before anyone enters the water. Lifeguards from around the country share what they want parents and caregivers to know—from active supervision to recognizing risks that aren't always obvious.

About us
For 175 years, the Y has been a place where meaningful connections help build stronger communities. With locations in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the country, we are part of everyday life, helping people work toward their goals, build relationships, and discover a true sense of belonging. For children and teens, this means early learning programs, afterschool activities, youth sports, swim lessons, and camp experiences that nurture confidence, skill development, and healthy growth. For adults, the Y provides comprehensive wellness programs, chronic disease prevention initiatives, group exercise classes, and opportunities for connection that support an active and balanced life. Across communities, we help meet critical needs through youth meal programs, community food distributions, housing assistance, safety initiatives, outreach for older adults, and services that connect people with essential resources. No matter who you are or where you are in your journey, there is a place for you here. Access to swim lessons can save lives—especially for children with autism. NPR's All Things Considered recently featured the YMCA of South Florida's "Swim Buddies" program, which helps kids with special needs, including those with autism, adjust to being in the water and learn drowning prevention skills and fundamental swimming techniques. It’s a powerful reminder that tailored support and meeting children where they are can help them build the skills and confidence they need to stay safe in and around the water. 🏊💙

Over the last 15+ years, our cancer support programs have helped more than 80,000 people navigate one of life’s most difficult journeys. As more families across the country are affected by this disease, the need for connection, care, and support continues to grow. Now, with support from AstraZeneca, we’re building on their ambition to eliminate cancer as a cause of death by expanding our impact to serve more people in communities nationwide through… - Education about screening and early detection - Extended reach in communities that need it most - More opportunities for social support and connection How, you ask? The plan is simple. We’re going to do more of the one thing that always leads to greater impact—work together.

From inspiring keynotes to meaningful conversations and shared moments of connection, the 2026 Youth Governors Conference brought youth leadership to life in a powerful way. Across every session, these young leaders demonstrated passion, courage, and a deep commitment to creating positive change. Their ideas, perspectives, and determination served as a reminder that the future is bright—and in exceptionally capable hands. We’re also deeply grateful to our strategic partner MissionSquare for their generous support of this conference and YMCA Youth and Government programs nationwide. Together, we’re creating more opportunities for young people to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and deepen their civic understanding as they prepare to make an impact in their communities and beyond. Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible. We’re excited to see how these young leaders continue to grow and lead. #YMCAGovCon

She joined YMCA Youth and Government unsure she belonged. Today, she’s Pennsylvania’s Youth Governor. As we look back on this week's Youth Governors Conference in Washington, DC, sponsored nationally by MissionSquare, we’re lifting up Aiyanna’s story as a powerful example of what’s possible when young people are supported in finding their voice and stepping into leadership. Together with MissionSquare, we’re working to expand access to civic engagement opportunities so more young people can build the skills and confidence to lead in their communities. Because when we invest in young leaders, we invest in stronger communities. #YMCAGovCon

Happy Founder's Day! While George Williams founded our organization in 1844, it's our staff, volunteers, and community members who have upheld our legacy ever since. Every volunteer who gives their time, every counselor who creates camp magic, and every neighbor who walks through our doors are the people who keep our mission alive. #y175 #noplacelikethisplace
