A bit more than a year ago Siemens announced the acquisition of Altair. As one consequence that directly affected me and my team, Simcenter Fluids and Thermal solutions got a bunch of nice additions. Recently Altair® EDEM™ completed a project with one of our technical partners Mpumalanga Consulting Engineers (MCE) - the challenge was to optimize a conveyor for the conveying and mixing process for macadamia nuts production. After dehusking macadamia nuts, these are conveyed to continue processing them, however, many issues can arise between the conveying and mixing phases including flow rate, blockages and segregation challenges. Using EDEM it is possible to model your conveying system and complete virtual testing of potential issues to solve them and optimize the operational process, to avoid long and costly prototyping and physical testing. With Christmas just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to see how we could optimize the production of mixed nuts! 🥜 Nut dosing and packaging systems are common in food manufacturing, yet they often struggle with dosing accuracy, waste and packaging integrity.
