Looking back at all the World Cup happenings along the water here in Toronto BUT IT’S NOT DONE YET. You can still watch games at the Pride House TO26 fan zone at the George Brown waterfront campus and WaterPark Place, and soccer activations are still at Harbourfront Centre. The Underground Food Market by Street Eats is also at the Malting Silos tonight through Sunday. And try the new East-West Shuttle to the new park at Ookwemin Minising. Thanks to all of those who made the WorldCup so great along the waterfront this year! Sharon Bollenbach, Alexander Bordokas, Collin Joseph, Amy Agulay Buchmann, MPA, and Anthea Foyer at the City. James (Jim) Jermyn, Massimo DeMaria, Morganne Campbell, Heidi Pokorny and Miranda Steele at HC and Soccer Canada’s fan zone, Ilana Altman, Stephanie Dudek, Alex Rand and Cara Williams at The Bentway, Yvonne Monestier, Emma Conway, Patrick Meredith-Karam at Waterfront Toronto, Annie Hart, Pangus Kung, Ryan Sargent, Saron Fanel, Nerys Rau and Laura Jamer at Pride House and George Brown, Phil at Street Eats, Beverly Tay and Courtney Starr at WaterPark Place, and Cynthia Rostie, Tyler Blackwell, Isabelle Winfield, Alejandro Izquierdo Martinez Pamela Inglis and John Anderson ☁ at our home base The Rostie Group viewing area. Anson Chow for the Love Park Sails! And of course Diarmid, Oliver, Jolene, Katherine, Athena, Dorsa and Michael at The Waterfront BIA.

NewsTalk1010 saw our Early-Summer (and big soccer tournament) Snapshot Survey and invited The Waterfront BIA on Moore in the Morning to talk about it. Strong visitation and foot traffic helped many businesses, but not all depending on categories and locations along the 'FIFA Corridor' from Union Station to the stadium and Fan Festival. And also a lot of gratitude from our businesses that the governments invested in a major event for Toronto that showcased our city to the world and hopefully helps increase visitation long-term. THE SURVEY: https://lnkd.in/gW8fQkFa Thanks Joseph Cristiano for sharing this clip.

Last week The Waterfront BIA asked tourism and visitor-facing businesses how they’re doing so far this Summer… and during that big soccer tournament. 50% seeing direct benefit from the World Cup being hosted in Toronto and having a significant presence along Queens Quay. 63% outperforming last Summer so far, with that group heavily weighted to the central and west of Queens Quay seeing the heaviest traffic due to proximity to Harbourfront Centre and “World Cup Corridor” activation. Hope to see visitor momentum continue through the Summer! And thanks to those (46!) businesses that took a few minutes to talk to us during their busy Canada Day week.

Seabins have returned! 🗑️ Our Fighting Floatables team are now including Seabins into their daily routine; keeping track of the small and large items of anthropogenic debris they collect. When combined with skimming, we removed 20 kg of anthropogenic debris, which is about the weight of 335 tennis balls. 🎾 We counted 406 small items and 3,769 large items, which included food wrappers, cigarette butts, bottle caps and foam.

I returned this week from joining the GBD Innovation Club delegation at the Beijing Central Business District Forum. We also visited Seoul for a tour with the Master Planner for Kangnam District. As usual, we ‘borrowed’ ideas from each other about how to improve the quality of experience and vibrancy in downtowns, and of course we all tell each other about how great our cities and neighbourhoods are, too! And encouraging people to come to Toronto for the International Downtown Association conference, Sept. 1-3. A few notes: Matching prime spaces with attractions: In Beijing, there’s a multi-year takeover of a large part of Chaoyang Park in the CBD by POPLAND, the first amusement park concept from the famous Pop Mart toy company. In Seoul, the 63 Building's mall rejuvenation now includes a permanent international satellite for the PARIS CENTRE POMPIDOU. A constant focus on rejuvenation, especially in dense areas: Beijing’s CBD has many similar problems with other cities, including underutilized highway underpasses - in their case brand new underpasses. Similar to what Toronto and The Bentway has been doing, Beijing is beginning a series of enhancements with their GUOMAO UNDERBRIDGE MEANDERING CORRIDOR. Seoul’s former light industrial neighbourhood SEONGSU built around its small shoe-manufacturer tradition to become a premier shopping and fashion district now. The area also tapped into major re-development of the Ttukseom amusement park area expanded with some of the largest river view apartment towers, a new subway stop putting them one station from Apgujeong's fashion hub, as well as a major expansion of the 3,000 acre ‘Seoul Forest’ with its zoo and children’s playgrounds. Thresholds for redevelopment support: In Seoul's Gangnam, older neighbourhoods of 6-12 storey buildings are now targeted for significantly higher densities supporting more housing and a higher quality of life near amenities. To ensure a small portion of stakeholders opposed to redevelopment are not able to stop all progress, a redevelopment association can be created in a neighbourhood where 70% of landowners and other key stakeholders agree to massive-scale redevelopment plans. Relentless integration of technology It’s difficult to not get distracted by the technology in China where 51% of domestic car sales are now electric, 12% overall. In Beijing, we visited Meituan Headquarters where Kevin L. from Toronto is creating an English version of their app. Meituan is one of the ‘everything apps’ in China that started with one thing -- deliveries, ride share -- and then expand to provide an entire mobile phone app array of services all in app. Including drone deliveries to your phone location in a park. Thanks to Chen Dai, Michael Edwards and Julia Solodova of the GBD Club for the invite -- it was great to meet Jules Hébert, James North, Ya'qoub Al Harthi, Lamya Al Bahri, Karl Isaksson, Bella Wang, Kiran Patel, Bernardo Mendia, and of course to see Bill, Paul, Pierre-Yves, Aude, Alvin Quan, Eileen Yan, Judy, Bai Rong, H.E. Dr. Mohammed and Dr. Ibrahim again!

A new library is coming to Toronto’s eastern waterfront. At Quayside, a new waterfront community taking shape in partnership with City of Toronto and Waterfront Toronto, we’ll be opening a branch—our 102nd—as part of this neighbourhood’s next chapter. The branch will expand access to library services and reflects our shared commitment to city-building—integrating public space, housing and community infrastructure to support connected neighbourhoods where Torontonians can live, learn and gather. This space will be shaped by community input, with public consultations anticipated to begin in 2028. Learn more: https://ow.ly/Y19E50Zhl5R
