The Commission and the Disability Worker Registration Board of Victoria (the Board) were pleased to submit a joint submission on the Victorian State Disability Plan and Victorian Autism Plan 2027–2031. Our submission highlights that a safe, high-quality disability workforce with strong safeguards that uphold the rights, dignity, safety and wellbeing of people with disability, is essential to achieving a truly inclusive Victoria. The Victorian Government wants to strengthen the disability workforce by helping you to complete your unpaid placement. Round 3 of the Regional Disability Worker Scholarships opens next week on Tuesday, 21 July! The program offers $3,500 in support to regional students to help them get qualified and start careers in disability. The Disability Worker Code of Conduct is a legal requirement in Victoria.      It applies to all disability workers, no matter how services are funded.      Our Code of Conduct poster highlights the core principles every worker must uphold: Respect. Quality. To celebrate NAIDOC week last week and it’s theme ‘50 Years of Deadly,’ we were fortunate to be joined at the Commission by Aboriginal Elder, Uncle Charles Pakana.  Uncle Charles spoke with us about reconciliation, cultural safety, and what it means to be an ally. He also led a powerful Q&A session with staff.  Later in the week, VDWC staff headed to the Aboriginal Housing Victoria’s 25th Annual NAIDOC Family Day at the Aborigines Advancement League. July is Disability Pride Month.  A month recognised each year to promote awareness and celebrate people with disability and encourage self-acceptance and embracing all disabilities. Disability Pride Month has its own flag, with its own meaning behind it. The five colours represent:  • Green – Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities  • Blue – Mental illness  • White – Sensory disabilities  • Yellow – Neurodiversity and development disabilities  • Red – Physical disabilities The diagonal line represents the cutting though the barriers people with disabilities face. At VDWC we’re committed to safer services, quality workforce standards and better choices for all people with disability.

Yesterday saw the beginning of National NAIDOC Week 2026 (5 -12 July), a week dedicated to amplifying and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.    This year’s theme is “50 Years of Deadly,” marking five decades of NAIDOC Week. This milestone is not a matter of chance, but because generations of people refused to be silenced.
