  • The Hidden Cost of Staying on MIM Many organisations still running Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM) believe they are reducing risk by delaying modernisation. In many cases, the opposite is now true. MIM has been an important platform. It solved complex hybrid identity challenges over the past decade and became deeply embedded in critical operational processes. But the market around it has changed significantly. The hidden cost is no longer maintaining MIM itself. Increasingly, it is the cost of what organisations are unable to modernise while remaining tied to it — including cloud transformation, operational simplification and the retirement of overlapping legacy infrastructure. What was once considered a stable, low-risk strategy is increasingly becoming a source of rising operational cost, technical debt and delayed transformation. We’re seeing organisations continue investing heavily in - ageing custom workflows - brittle synchronisation logic - shrinking specialist skillsets - complex operational support and - infrastructure designed for a different technology era. At the same time, many organisations still assume that moving to Microsoft Entra-based identity architecture will be highly disruptive, prohibitively expensive or unable to support complex hybrid requirements. That assumption deserves reassessment. Over the past several years, Microsoft has significantly matured the Entra platform across governance, lifecycle management, external identity, security integration and hybrid capability. What’s also changed is the emergence of orchestration approaches that allow organisations to progressively modernise hybrid identity environments around Entra — without needing to immediately replace every legacy integration or introduce large additional governance platforms simply to bridge cloud and on-premises systems. This is an important shift. Many hybrid identity challenges are not fundamentally governance problems. They are orchestration, integration and data flow challenges. And organisations are increasingly discovering those challenges can be solved far more elegantly than they could several years ago. This is where many organisations are reassessing the economics. The ongoing cost of maintaining legacy identity infrastructure is no longer just technical — it is increasingly operational, financial and strategic. It impacts - operational agility - cloud transformation - supportability - the ability to retire overlapping legacy infrastructure and - the ability to adapt to modern governance and AI-driven security models. The organisations navigating this best are not waiting for a forced migration event. They are reassessing the true long-term cost of staying where they are. Modernisation is no longer simply a technology decision. Increasingly, it is becoming an operational and financial one. #MicrosoftEntra #IdentitySecurity #IdentityGovernance #HybridIdentity #CyberSecurity #DigitalTrust #AustralianGovernment #NZGov

  • Great identity design doesn’t guarantee control — continuity does.   In her latest post, Lauren Thurston explains where identity risk really builds - in the spaces between projects. That’s where well-designed systems start to drift. Where exceptions linger. Where ownership gets blurred — and governance quietly weakens.   UNIFY’s Managed Security Services exist to close those gaps. Our team doesn’t just monitor — they realign, restore, and sustain trust in identity at scale.   It’s why some of the most complex and regulated organisations trust us to keep their identity infrastructure operating with clarity — long after go-live.   Identity fails quietly. But not when it’s managed with discipline.   #ManagedSecurity #IdentityGovernance #DigitalTrust #CyberResilience #PublicSectorSecurity #NZCyberSecurity #UNIFYSolutions

Identity Fails Quietly: Ownership Fragmentation Fourth in my series on Identity Fails Quietly. Identity risk rarely sits neatly within a single team. Security defines policy, IT operates platforms, HR drives lifecycle events and application owners approve access. In theory this is shared responsibility, in practice accountability often becomes diffused. Decisions slow, control gaps emerge and risk hides in the spaces between functions. Nothing appears broken, yet systemic exposure steadily increases as this is not a technology failure but ownership and operating model problem. Without clear custodianship, even well-designed identity controls struggle to remain effective as organisations evolve. Identity systems don’t usually fail loudly, they weaken through ambiguity. #IdentityGovernance #SecurityGovernance #RiskManagement #IdentityAtScale #CyberSecurity #DigitalTrust #OperationalResilience #UNIFYSolutions

  • When should a learner become a digital identity?   Many education organisations activate digital identities far too early — often at first enquiry or application. It feels helpful, but it quietly creates long-term problems: duplicate accounts, weak credential hygiene, confused lifecycles and unnecessary operational cost.   A cleaner approach is to align identity activation with institutional commitment. At enrolment, the relationship changes — governance expectations shift, security baselines matter, and continuity becomes important. Treating enrolment as the identity activation point allows CIAM to do what it does best: provide secure, persistent access without undermining lifecycle clarity or ownership boundaries.   Good identity design isn’t about creating accounts quickly — it’s about creating them at the right moment.   For more comment see https://lnkd.in/gPwhYfYg   #EducationAustralia #EducationNZ #DigitalIdentity #IdentityManagement

  • UNIFYConnect Cloud completes IRAP assessment — trust by design, not by exception UNIFYConnect Cloud helps organisations integrate legacy on-premises identity systems into a Microsoft Entra-centred hybrid architecture — one of the hardest challenges CIOs face during cloud migration. We’ve now completed an Independent Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) assessment, with the final report issued. The independent assessment evaluated the platform against the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) and complements UNIFY’s ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. For UNIFY, IRAP isn’t a marketing badge or a one-off audit. It reflects an ongoing commitment to independent assurance, transparency and security-by-design for government and regulated customers. Our focus now moves to continuous improvement and supporting customers’ own assurance and accreditation activities where UNIFYConnect Cloud is in scope. • Designing identity frameworks is rarely the hard part. Making them work long after the initial design phase is. At scale, identity doesn’t fail because the architecture was wrong. It fails quietly over time. - Exceptions accumulate - Roles drift - Reviews become procedural - Ownership fragments - Controls erode under everyday change People move on. Systems evolve. Organisations restructure.    But identity controls are expected to keep working.   That’s why identity at scale isn’t a one-off project — it’s an operational discipline. Governance only delivers security when it is: - Actively maintained - Continuously enforced - Adjusted as risk, systems, and business models change This is where UNIFY’s managed operational services matter — not as “support”, but as sustained ownership of identity controls as a living system working alongside existing platforms, strategies, and internal teams. We’ve explored this shift — from identity as a project to identity as an operational control — in more detail in a recent opinion piece on our website. See https://lnkd.in/ggHGvubE Identity at scale doesn’t need constant redesign. It needs continuity, accountability, and operational stewardship. Because identity at scale isn’t proven at go-live — it’s proven over time. #IdentityGovernance #SecurityOperations #CyberSecurity #DigitalTrust #EnterpriseSecurity #RiskManagement #OperationalResilience
