Ello is full of teammates (like our Co-Founder & CEO Tom S.) who are passionate about changing education and see technology as critical leverage to do so. If you want to produce a 10x outcome instead of settling for an incremental 10% change, come join us! We're #hiring. As Tom put it best: "But the reason to do it - the reason to take that on - is that it matters. Really matters." Here's to kids all over the world growing up with access to a world-class teacher. See our open roles here: jobs.ashbyhq.com/ello

In 2003, my hometown was voted the worst town in England. My granddad told me not to aim too high. A vicar once told me the estate I volunteered on didn't even have enough initiative to start its own gang - the gangs all came from Liverpool. This isn't a post about building an AI teacher, or about technology saving the world - it's about the ceiling that shouldn't be there; for me or for the kids who were handed a much lower one. I've started to think it doesn't have to be.

Building an AI tutor for kids at Ello has been one of the most meaningful challenges of my career. It combines the low-latency constraint of real-time voice AI and the grounding problems of computer use agents. Good design means tackling a problem's complexity so your users never have to. I'm proud to share the work our team has done here. A deep dive into how we built our tutoring harness is below. This is just the beginning, and we're excited to continue sharing learnings working at the forefront of AI and education.

Everyone's asking what AI can do for their job. We asked if it could teach a 6-year-old. Introducing Ello 2.0: reading, math & more for ages 4-9. Everything we build will have a free tier, and it will be completely free in emerging markets, beginning in Africa. Teachers are critical but have an impossible job. Classrooms have to teach to the average student. But 0% of children are average. Families that can afford it solve this gap with a 1:1 tutor. We bring that tutor to everyone. Ello adapts teaching to each child, in the moment. No two kids ever have the same experience. We built for the hardest case there is: a young child with limited resources and no one to teach them. This is hard. ➡️ Kids don’t talk like adults, so we trained our own speech models. ➡️ Teaching isn't a chatbot response, so we have 4 LLMs running at every moment to make real pedagogical decisions. ➡️ Young kids are hard to engage, so all of this has to happen in under 1s. Solve this, and you've built the best teacher in the world for every child; whether they're bored and unchallenged in a US classroom, or one of the 270 million kids worldwide without a teacher.

We're building the world's first AI teacher. Want to help? 🌍 We're hiring for three roles right now: 🎨 Head of Design (San Francisco) — Lead Ello's creative vision across product and marketing. Shape how our AI teacher looks, feels, and behaves — and help build a design culture that can match the ambition of our mission. 🧠 AI/ML Engineer (San Francisco) — Build the systems that decide what to teach next, when to intervene, and how to adapt to each child in real time. 📦 Product Manager (Nairobi) — Create the foundation for a world-class product organization in Kenya. Turn insights from kids and families into product features that make children laugh and learn. At Ello, we ship weekly, test directly with kids, and push the limits of what AI can do in education. We're already helping tens of thousands of children learn to read, and we're about to launch a new app that will help transform outcomes for millions of kids around the globe. If you’re excited about building AI for good, we’d love to hear from you. 👇 Explore all three roles: jobs.ashbyhq.com/ello
