Last night, Transdev celebrated Sydney Light Rail achieving ISC certification for operational sustainability performance. This reflects our three-year commitment, alongside ALTRAC Light Rail & Transport for NSW, to assessing and improving how we operate, maintain and manage a light rail network that supports more than 41 million passenger journeys each year. Sydney Light Rail was the first light rail operator to register with ISC for an Operational Sustainability rating, the first project in NSW, and only the third in Australia to do so. The Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) plays an important role in driving sustainable infrastructure across Australia and New Zealand, helping the industry deliver stronger environmental, social and economic outcomes across the full lifecycle of assets. A special moment was seeing our Environment and Sustainability Manager, Jane Drobysheva, share our journey at ISC Connect in Brisbane and inspire others who are considering, commencing or working towards their own ISC rating. More than a certification, this process has helped us embed sustainability into everyday operational decision-making, from energy and water management to climate resilience, environmental performance, stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of passionate Transport for NSW executives from the Finance, Technology & Commercial unit to our Randwick Light Rail Depot for a day in the life of our operations. It was great to see some of our visitors fully immerse themselves in the experience, travelling by light rail to get there and even having their tickets checked along the way. Fortunately, all were compliant travellers! From there, the experience moved from the customer journey to behind the scenes, where the group had the chance to better understand what it takes to keep a light rail network moving every day. We may also have spotted a few future light rail drivers, based on their impressive skills on the simulator. As the operator and maintainer of Sydney Light Rail, through our valued client ALTRAC Light Rail and in partnership with Transport for NSW, days like yesterday are so important. They create space for better engagement, open dialogue and shared understanding of both the opportunities and challenges that come with meeting growing demand. And demand is certainly growing. With 41 million trips now occurring each year, it is clear that light rail has become a much-loved way to move around Sydney, supporting customers, communities and the continued growth of the city around it. When it comes to Sydney Light Rail, the old saying feels true: if you build it, they will come! We are grateful for the passionate people we proudly call our transport partners, and for the opportunity to keep working together to deliver great outcomes for customers.

Keeping young people safe around the light rail means finding new and sometimes unconventional ways to connect, especially with those who may be taking risks, doing it tough, or navigating complex challenges in their lives. Traditional approaches don’t always land. Sometimes, it’s about stepping outside the playbook and simply showing up differently. So this week, we gave it a shot. We met with a group of young people from the Inner West, but we didn’t do it alone. We were backed by our incredible partners at Transport for NSW, supported by the Inner West Police, inspired by local artist Dallas, and most importantly, we were joined by the boys themselves (not a guaranteed outcome). For them, it wasn’t a lecture. It was a moment to meet someone who had once stood where they are. Dallas didn’t tell them what to do.....he showed them what’s possible. He gave them a legal, safe space to paint, and we challenged them to think: do you want to be remembered as a vandal… or consider what it takes to truly be an artist? If even one young person walks away from this with a shift in mindset or a safer choice in their future, then it’s been more than worth it. As we say at Transdev Australia & New Zealand: Care. Share. Dare.
