Today marks the opening of the public consultation for BS 9994 – Fire Strategies in Buildings. The standard can be accessed via: https://lnkd.in/djF7TB2c This represents the culmination of a journey that began several years ago within BSI, when I convened the development of this new British Standard during the Phase 1 Grenfell Tower Inquiry. After significant industry engagement it was evidently apparent that whilst fire strategies were often relied upon by designers, regulators, contractors and building owners alike, there was no single recognised benchmark setting out what good looked like. BS 9994 has been developed to help address this need. The standard seeks to establish a consistent framework for the development, implementation, management, maintenance and review of fire strategies throughout the life of a building. It has been intentionally developed as a specification recognising that a fire strategy is not simply a document produced for regulatory approval, but a living expression of how fire safety is intended to be achieved and maintained. The publication of the draft for public consultation is therefore a significant milestone, but very much not the end of the process. Standards are strongest when they reflect the collective experience, expertise and challenge of the industry they serve. I would encourage fire engineers, regulators, architects, contractors, building control professionals, asset owners, dutyholders and residents' representatives to review the draft and participate in the consultation.
