New global study reveals strong public support for action on antimicrobial resistance. In 2024, UN Member States adopted only the second-ever Political Declaration on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), setting out ambitious commitments to tackle one of the world's most urgent health challenges. Achieving these commitments will require more than policy alone. It will depend on public understanding, trust, and support. We brought together 2,419 citizens across Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Tanzania to deliberate on 45 AMR policy proposals using Deliberative Polling® and Stanford University's AI-assisted Online Deliberation Platform. The results were encouraging: support increased for 43 of the 45 proposals after participants had the opportunity to engage with balanced evidence, hear diverse perspectives, and discuss the issues in depth. Infection prevention measures received the strongest support, while proposals on antibiotic use in agriculture and access to antibiotics revealed important regional differences and highlighted the need for context-specific approaches. Citizens left the process not just more informed, but more engaged with the solutions required. AMR is both a technical and societal challenge. This project shows that when people are given the time, information, and opportunity to deliberate, they engage with complex issues and support the actions needed to address them. The Trinity Challenge is a charity supporting the creation of data-driven and analytics solutions to help protect the world against global health threats. Founded in 2021 by Dame Sally Davies, our mission is to support data-driven solutions that will help the world prepare for and respond to global outbreaks and health emergencies. We’re committed to working with governments, individuals and organisations across the world, to help improve our resilience against current and future threats to global health. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the inaugural Trinity Challenge on Pandemic Preparedness and Response received applications from 340 teams across 60 countries and distributed a prize fund of £5.7 million across eight winning initiatives. Following its success, the second Challenge - The Trinity Challenge on Antimicrobial Resistance - issued a call to the world’s best and brightest minds for data-driven solutions that will protect the power of antibiotics. We received 285 applications from 57 countries, and awarded £2.7 million to four winners in Vietnam, India and South Africa. In 2024 we also launched our first Youth Summit and competition, aiming to empower youth-led organisations and youth leaders to address one of the world’s most pressing public health challenges, the antibiotic emergency. Our first youth competition attracted applications from across the globe: 97 applications from 46 different countries. Eighteen months ago, the Trinity Challenge selected four winners from 285 applications across 57 countries, awarding £2.7 million to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through data, technology, and community engagement. At our recent Innovation Showcase, they shared what they have built so far: Farm2Vet (Vietnam) has built a self-learning AI platform that translates field data into hyperlocal veterinary guidance for livestock keepers. The team expanded field validation from 30 to around 100 frontline users, formed the Farm2Vet LLC to anchor long-term sustainability, and earned recognition as a case study in a World Economic Forum report on AMR in Asia. AMRSense (India) has created the intelligence layer that sits between community behaviour and national AMR policy. Working with Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) community health workers as AMR ambassadors, the platform captures data at the community level and translates it into dashboards that are targeted at policymakers and key decision makers. The team secured formal regulatory clearance and is deploying to 230 workers across 40 urban primary healthcare centres in Bengaluru, having already engaged over 2,000 healthcare stakeholders. OASIS (India) is building a digital support system for India’s estimated 2 million informal rural healthcare providers – people who deliver 70-90% of first-contact care but operate outside formal health systems. The Antibiotic Bandhu app gives these providers guidance, clinical decision support, and patient follow-up tools grounded in nearly 30 years of behavioural research. The app is now being rolled out to around 200 providers across two districts in West Bengal. AMRoots (South Africa) is working with small-scale farming communities in the Eastern Cape, where the team established a sequencing laboratory within a remote rural community to map antibiotic resistance genes across human, animal, water, and meat samples. They are now developing a Herd Health WhatsApp platform to connect farmers directly with veterinary advice, planned for rollout across 180 farmer associations representing approximately 400,000 people. As our Founder, Dame Sally Davies, said at the event, “In global health terms, [18 months] is not a long time. And yet what these teams have already accomplished is impressive: generating new data, building trust within communities, strengthening local capability, training health workers, and beginning to shift practice and increase the global evidence base in meaningful ways.” All four teams now need follow-on funding, technical infrastructure, and cross-sector partnerships to sustain and scale their work. This World Environment Day, we are spotlighting The Dispose Safely, Protect Our Planet campaign, led by Eliyah wekesa and the WSU Global Health-Kenya team. By installing secure medicine take-back cabinets in 15 health facilities across Kibera, combined with education, they are giving community members a safe, accessible route to return unused and expired medicines rather than letting them enter the environment. In their 2024 pilot, 26.5 kg of medicines were collected in just two weeks. Around 30% were antibiotics. The Trinity Challenge is supporting the campaign to scale up. Antibiotics that enter our natural ecosystems can drive the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Starting with the individual action of the household as an entry point to a broader AMR conversation, this team is enhancing community safety and supporting public health. The team is driven by a shared purpose, to support the communities least equipped to deal with drug-resistant infections. Nature shines a light on one of AMR's toughest obstacles - and we are proud to see a solution from one of the 2024 Trinity Challenge winners featured. The article explores how antibiotic overuse in low-resource settings is driving resistance - from unlicensed street sellers handing out the wrong drugs, to physicians overprescribing to keep patients happy, to doctors making treatment decisions without access to basic diagnostic tests. One of the solutions featured is the Antibiotic Bandhu app (friend of antibiotics in Bengali)- developed by the OASIS team at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London led by Meenakshi Gautham. It gives informal rural healthcare providers (including para-vets) in India the information they need to make better decisions about antibiotic provision. It's exactly the kind of practical, community-level solution that the Trinity Challenge exists to support. This week at the World Health Assembly, the Trinity Challenge were pleased to co-host the side event “Reinvigorating Scalable Actions for AMR 2030 Vision” with the Institute of Philanthropy. Bringing together health ministers, global health leaders, and philanthropic partners, the conversation was frank, urgent and insightful. One message from the room was clear: we must work together with speed and ambition if we are to move from declaration to action. Siloed data is an ongoing challenge. Information collected across health, agriculture, and environment systems too often stays within vertical structures - shared during emergencies, then locked away again. An interconnected One Health approach and joined-up thinking is essential for us to make progress. For National Action Plans to drive real change, these must not just cascade from the global commitments; but be fully funded, accurately costed, and adapted to local contexts. Bold targets mean little without the evidence base to measure them against. The most effective approaches bring together government, industry, and academia around shared goals, creating the spaces for trust-building and honest dialogue that no strategy document alone can replace. And looking to the next decade of AMR research and development, a challenge to the field: low- and middle-income countries must be at the centre of the antibiotic pipeline - driving the research agenda, setting priorities, and shaping how new treatments are developed and deployed.
