China lands a reusable rocket for the first time. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation carried out the launch from Hainan in southern China. The milestone puts China in a small group of countries with demonstrated reusable launch capability, alongside the United States. The Long March 10B can carry at least 16 metric tons to low-Earth orbit, a payload capacity comparable to SpaceX's Falcon 9. The technical approach differs, though. Rather than landing autonomously on a ground pad or drone ship, the Long March 10B booster uses landing hooks to grab a net fixed to a floating recovery platform. That distinction matters for operational tempo: the Falcon 9 completes pad landings in under 10 minutes from separation and can be turned around for another flight within days. Microsoft cuts 4,800 jobs in major Xbox restructure More than 1,600 Xbox roles were cut immediately, while a further 1,600 will go as four game studios move outside the company. Executive vice president Amy Coleman told staff the changes reflect a fast-changing industry rather than a shift toward AI replacing jobs. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma, who took over the role earlier this year, framed the cuts as the start of a wider transformation rather than a retreat. She said history is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability, adding that Xbox has no intention of becoming one of them. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVkBSh3C

DuckDuckGo's browser now blocks YouTube ads by default. DuckDuckGo has added built in YouTube ad blocking to its browser, allowing users to watch most videos without pre roll or mid roll ads. The feature is enabled by default on Windows, Mac, and iPhone, with Android support becoming the default in a future update. The ad blocker uses open source filter lists from the uBlock Origin community and is integrated directly into the browser. DuckDuckGo says occasional playback issues may occur as YouTube updates its platform, but the feature reinforces the browser's focus on privacy and a cleaner browsing experience. Alibaba Reportedly Bans Employees From Using Claude Code. Alibaba has reportedly instructed employees to stop using Anthropic's Claude Code for work starting July 10, citing security concerns after reports that the AI coding assistant contained hidden code capable of identifying users linked to China. The company has reportedly classified Claude Code as high risk software and is directing staff to switch to its own AI coding assistant, Qoder. Anthropic has said the feature was introduced to prevent unauthorized access and protect against AI model distillation, adding that stronger safeguards have since replaced the earlier approach. The move comes as tensions between Anthropic and Chinese AI companies continue to grow. Anthropic has been tightening restrictions on access to its models in China while also accusing Alibaba of using Claude outputs for AI model distillation, an allegation Alibaba has not publicly addressed. The latest development highlights how security, geopolitics, and competition are becoming increasingly intertwined as global AI companies race to protect their technology and expand their influence. Tesla posts record second-quarter deliveries as Europe demand rebounds. The result is Tesla's strongest quarterly delivery figure on record and points to a recovery in Europe that outweighed continued weakness in North America. Deliveries rose about 25% compared with the same quarter a year earlier. The figures suggest Tesla's core vehicle business is regaining momentum after two consecutive years of annual sales declines. Tesla produced 451,758 vehicles during the quarter, according to the company's own figures. Deliveries exceeded production by more than 28,000 units, a gap that reflects a drawdown of inventory built up earlier in the year. Rivian, a smaller electric vehicle maker, also beat second-quarter delivery estimates on the same day and raised its full-year forecast, a sign that demand across the wider American EV market may be stabilising after a prolonged slump. OpenAI in early talks to give US government 5% stake. Sam Altman, the OpenAI chief executive, has argued that a government stake is the clearest way to share the financial benefits of AI with the American public. The Financial Times reported that two people familiar with the discussions described the talks as conceptual and at an early stage. Any formal arrangement would likely need an act of Congress before it could take effect. The suggestion follows growing political pressure on Silicon Valley to demonstrate broader public benefit from an AI boom that has concentrated enormous wealth in a small number of companies. Ministers back law change for pavement delivery robots. The move would place the low-speed machines in the same regulatory category as e-scooters and other micromobility vehicles, following a public consultation. It would resolve a legal grey area created by the 1835 Highways Act, which bans carriages from footways. Safety campaigners have criticised the plan, warning it could make crowded pavements more hazardous for older people, blind and partially sighted pedestrians, and wheelchair users. Low-speed delivery robots already operate in a handful of English towns and cities, mostly carrying groceries and takeaway food. The Department for Transport says its priority is safety, but the regulatory basis for the existing trials remains unclear under current law. The box-shaped, six-wheeled machines are built by Starship Technologies, a company founded by two former Skype co-founders and based in San Francisco. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eHxQAw8N
